One day the team and SEALs went out in Rubber Hull Inflatable Boats into the Irish Sea, a MC-130 airdropped a bundle with Skyhook system and we set up a balloon pickup. One SEAL and myself went out in a rubber boat with the dummy 200 lb sandbag. He was in the bow holding the sandbag as I was the coxswain holding the boat into the wind and current. MC-130 approached with the pinchers out and just missed the cable. Sand bag rose about 4', back 4' and then dropped right in my lap! Balloon cut away and was gone. Went back to the RHIB where they had the bundle and some more helium. And since it was nearing dusk now, the lights on the line didn't work. Another SNAFU (Situation Normal All Fucked Up), we did a quick bundling of chemlites and attached them where they were supposed to be. Raised the balloon and RHIB went away. This time I told the SEAL, I'm holding the sandbag. Dusk is falling and lights are shining bright above us. Here comes the big iron bird with the nose hook extended, looking like some ugly insect. Line goes into the hook this time but as I spread eagle on the bow letting go of the sandbag, I see nothing but a BLUE bolt come down the line, cross over and static electricity still ZAPPED my ass! Never seen anymore Fulton Extraction Systems used after that. Get it in the lap or the ass. Your choice!
