I picked up an 11.5 pistol for a Form 1. It's so stinking light! Looks to me like all the right parts are installed. It's going to make a nice duty/training rifle. I will say the Warner and Swasey red dot didn't stay on it very long. I will put it on my 590 shotgun instead. As soon as I get a weapons light installed it will be ready to go. Still undecided on the suppressor. |

Update... Just got my El Corto back from the range an hour or so ago. It is a pistol turned SBR on a Form 1. A few observations... 1) The Warner and Swasey optic is pure junk. It was a good enough idea, I suppose, but it is definitely the weakest link. It will not hold zero. It is not even remotely in the same league as the rest of the rifle. 2) The trigger. Oh my. The best "mil spec" I've ever shot. It might not be a Geissle SSA but it is definitely not going to hold you back. Awesome reset. Very good crisp and fairly light. 3) The barrel? I believe the 16 inchers are button rifled. The El Corto barrel is allegedly CHF and definitely chromed. It will deliver very good accuracy at distances most patrol rifles will see. Even with the Poors optic I was using, a Primary Arms SLX MD25, it was reliably getting hits on a post-it note from the 150 foot line. 4) It does not like PMAGS at all. My metal GI mags seem to seat better and feed much better. I had one PMAG not strip a round properly and wound up with a double feed. Good practice at a clearing drill but shouldn't ever happen. 5) I went with a B-5 Sopmod stock and it is quite comfortable. Overall, it is a solid buy in it's price range. Definitely a step up from our current department duty rifles. It's a shame they are no longer available. My next AR will likely be a Super Duty but it's going to have to be REALLY nice to justify the jump in price. I suppose that's what helped kill the ALG line. Over the next eight or ten weeks this little AR is going to get thrashed. Any bets on what breaks next? The optic, well, an Eotech is on the way today. ETA: I've been grinding away every week on the range with this thing. It has been perfect with GI mags, which are my personal preference anyway. I have a YHM Turbo K on it now and am not getting blasted by any gas. The can eliminates most of the blast and flash so I don't care at all that it is not "hearing safe". The Eotech has been a very good optic. I am using a 36 yard zero to take advantage of the chevron in the bottom of the reticle. Overall the thing is very light and comfortable to carry. The bad... The handguard gets incredibly hot with just a little sustained firing. Not a bid deal on duty but it is a serious problem in training. The mounted light is a whole chapter in itself. Right now I'm using a Streamlight TLR1-HL mounted on the left side of the weapon. It is easy to actuate and doesn't get hung up when I sling the rifle. It is prone to being turned on accidentally because the switch is not really designed for this use. It's more of a proof of concept for me at this point and I will probably go with a more conventional light in that position with a clamshell switch. I am not a huge fan of tape switches since they are a common point of failure for me, personally. I would never use the TLR1 as a duty light on a rifle. |
