I place backorders every week. "Getting in line" may be the only way to get high demand item.
Waits depend on brand, but Dead Air seems to be the best at refreshing inventory. Some waits have been two days, other two months.
The unhelpfulness of the person I talked to @ SS who refused to give an ETA (somewhat understandable) or tell me how long these were backordered in the past (No reason to not tell me this. I would not hold them to it, but would like to know if I'm looking at 6 weeks or 6 months) does not exactly inspire confidence.

My dealer rep won't tell me ETA either. For the same reason I won't tell buyers..........only the manufacturer really knows when he plans to ship. Telling a buyer or dealer "Two weeks" may close the sale, but it damn well better be two weeks. Its bad business to give an ETA when you dont really know.
And thats the reason the phone reps aren't telling you an ETA....they dont know and have been told not to invent a time just to close a sale.
In my experience, just being "backorderable" means SS expects a shipment to arrive in the next 30-60 days. With faster approval times, there are hundreds of dealers trying to get product. Waiting for a popular silencer to show "in stock"? You might be waiting months. Meanwhile that silencer is being shipped to all the dealers who placed backorders. Once those backorders are filled, SS will show them on their website as "in stock", available for a web order.
It SEEMS like they have made the process easier with their kiosk thing to do fingerprints and photos. Is that thing worth the hassle of backordering with them?

It does. But understand many dealers also have the ability to scan prints or you can even roll your own.
If a dealer in my area has the kiosk is it only used to process Silencer Shop orders or can it be used when buying from other sites?

The kiosk doesnt do anything other than scan prints and take some descriptive info of the buyer. You don't place orders using the kiosk.
Any dealer with a Silencer Shop account can upload a non SS firearm and use SS for the prints and eForm processing. SS will charge him $25 for that...so he'll add $25 to his transfer fee.
