I thought I would share some photos of this surplus upper that I received from Shark Arms yesterday in case anyone else is looking for one of these. I've been planning to get one of these for years to clone my Army-issued M4 from back in 2005, but when they switched over to the CAGE code markings, I decided to wait for a good price on a C-marked upper. Chris has been getting these surplus uppers in for the past couple months, and it was time to pull the trigger since the Colt supply seems to be intermittent these days. He told me the uppers he was getting were low round and seemed to mostly just have some marks from storage. I'm always curious about the source of these kinds of parts, but I'm guessing these were from police or other agency guns that weren't shot much more than for periodic qualification. It's obviously been fired due to the wear on the front of the bolt and residue under the gas tube behind the FSB, but the upper itself is incredibly clean looking. I couldn't have asked for a better Colt upper when the C-marked stuff is getting pricier. Shark's price was $650 shipped. The barrel is dated 11/08, and the RAS is marked 10/08, so the upper was probably assembled and shipped in early 2009. The bolt has the dot matrix style MPC marking - not sure when they started doing that, but obviously it's been that way for a while (although I think the marking style wasn't consistent, as with many things Colt). Chris included a new side sling swivel mount in a separate bag since the upper didn't have one installed already. It's not totally perfect for my 2004-built clone if I wanted to get obsessive about the barrel date, but I'll swap the barrel onto a raised C upper that I picked up last year and use my old 2002 RAS, and I'll save this C-stamped upper receiver for another project. Kind of shame to take apart this excellent upper, but it will get me where I want to go with this very personal project of mine. Off to Retro Arms for a spacer pin and weld!

I'm not really familiar with proof marks, but this just looks like a ding in the receiver to me, maybe from it being stored next to another one. I imagine these surplus uppers were probably all piled together at some point. This was hard to photograph because of the glare on my workbench last night, but there are two marks, with the one above being slightly smaller / shallower but similar in shape to the lower one:
