On my new 6951 (also first 9mm AR I have ever owned), I did a fair amount of research on the intricacies of the platform. I was tracking that this would be a 1 piece insert that was pinned in place with 2 pins. Well mine is a one piece, but is only held in place by friction from 2 springs! It is a very tight fit, but once the mag catch is depressed and outta the way, you can push the insert all the way out. There is NO way this would accidentally come out, so I guess it makes sense to not pin it anymore. You have to apply very strong and even pressure to the front and rear of insert to push it down. Once that is out, it appears you would just have to swap out the bolt catch and you now have a standard lower. What are everyone's thoughts on this? https://imgur.com/a/gKjEUkX |

More versatile lower in that design. Interesting that the conversion block uses springs to push right to left, how centered does the block look when installed? Are the spring captured or can you remove them? It'd be interesting to see if.they are a unique spring or a repurpose of an existing AR spring that would be easy to find down the road if a replacement is needed. Edit to add: It looks similar to RRA design but without the same tension interlock. https://www.brownells.com/gun-parts/rifle-parts/rifle-caliber-conversion-kits/ar-15m16-9mm-dedicated-conversion-block/ https://www.brownells.com/gun-parts/rifle-parts/rifle-caliber-conversion-kits/ar-15m16-9mm-drop-conversion-block/ |
| The block is perfectly centered without the springs! It is tight enough to where you HAVE to push it down on the feed ramp and on the back to remove it. If not, it instantly stops. The springs are just sitting in a small pocket about half of their length, so they fall right out when its outside the magwell. The springs do not seem necessary but do ensure there is solid tension applied in addition to the precise fit. |

Strange. Every one that I've seen has been pinned into the receiver. Attached File |

I see they still use the LTA prefix. Hank Tatro was the primary engineer of the 9mm Colts and the semi auto ones are prefixed TA for pre September ‘94 and LTA after September ‘94. I think the select-fire models are HTA prefixed to honor his work I guess. Have the really made only 9000 since 1994? LOL IMG_5659 by SmëgHead, on Flickr" />

Colt has been pinning the Magwell for at least 14+ years as it shows to do it in the Colt Armorers manual dated 2010. I find it hard to believe they suddenly decided to stop which is why I find this thread interesting. Please follow up after you contact Colt. Your luck is the type I usually have.

Hold it in place while this is drilled as an assembly? |
| I want it done right, so it will have to go back. In the last month I have purchased a new Colt Defender .45, M5, and this. Makes me feel a little goofy to spend so much on a company that would deliver such a lame example. I am pretty sure they "forgot " to pin the magwell and put in my buffer spacer which makes me sad cause I really do like Colt. But time will tell (no answer as of yet) if they make things right. I also have to drive an hour to go to my gun shop so this is all annoying and a decent inconvenience to say the least. |

You should be able to ship directly to Colt and they can ship directly back to you since it's for repair work. |

Probably keep the unit tight in the magwell so the block doesn't shift side to side on the pins. The RRA version with the tensioning hex key does the same thing as the springs, but it depends on the end user to get it snug enough but not so snug as to cause damage by over torquing. |

Unreal, they replied and said it should have been pinned so I will have to send it in. But the stranger part is that the "buffer should be fine as is". I KNOW there is supposed to be a spacer in there, and this whole thing is ridiculous. No apology or guidance so to them facilitating my return, so I had to send another email. I think I might just sell this at a loss because I am beyond butt hurt about it ![]() ![]() |

My comment not worth more than an observation… I have a R6450 owned for probably 20yrs and LE marked ... It’s pinned as others have posted. In 2017 I acquired a complete 10.5” Colt upper for a “pistol” build. Built it on an Anderson lower BCM LPK and a Hahn drop in block… no pins no pressure points… Both 9mm ar’s pur along happily. 8oz buffer and Damage Ind carbine action spr in both!! All good. H |

H Oh I hear ya. It’s not that it can’t work, it’s more that Colt just didn’t build it right and is also saying a buffer spacer isn’t needed. So that doesn’t really give me a lot of confidence in a buyers market when I could have bought many other higher quality carbines. |

I put a few Quarters in both buffer tubes to limit carrier rear movement. Have never broke a bolt catch. My 6450’s carrier Is Not ramped either…. My 10.5” is. Both of these gun uppers barrel nuts were Finger Tight from Colts production line !!!! 20yr span Same QC ….,,🧐 H |

After dealing with a less that great CS rep, I got ahold of someone great. Today I am dropping the rifle off at an FFL and Colt will arrange all return shipping to them for hopefully a replacement (but at least a repair). All might not be lost on Colt as far as I am concerned. You might have noticed that I could not give the rifle away in the EE, But in the end I would rather have confidence in Colt and enjoy my rifle. Will keep y'all posted |
