I revisited this thread since I just put in for my first AZ elk tag. Good to know a 16" (in your case shorter) bbl can take an elk at distance. Haven't been able to get the scratch for an OBR but do have a lesser .308 with a 16" bbl. Then first I need to get drawn and then I'll sweat out the rifle. I'm just a little older than your shooter but never too late
