Hey Forrest,
After reading your post about your A2 on order and the response from Rock River. I went down to the local gun shop to cancel my A2 order that I had on order for two years. He sat down with me and called Rock River about my order. He put them on speaker phone and asked my order. Rock River said all A2 rifles were on indefinite hold until further notice while they concentrated on the A4 production. He then asked if he could canel my order and get the money I had put down for it. They said no problem with it. He went ahead and did this. He then turned to me and said sorry but this is business and was keeping my money. He said I entered into a binding contract with him over this rifle and I had broken and therefore he was entitled to keep the money. I could have said several things or done something but I played it smart. I told him he was getting no more of my business and I was going to file a complaint against him with the better business beareau. Needless to say, I completely soured on Rock River and the gun shop. I got the LAR-8 anyway as one of the fellow AF15com members is selling his rifle to me. I can understand your situation and feel for you. Sorry for being so long-winded. Well, Dayum, Forest got a 20" A4. Thats what I have on order. Maybe mine will come in soon, maybe both of them. Good thing I socked away the money in an envelope a long time ago...........Now,, lets see....... where did I put that envelope?

With the absolute clarity of hindsight, I'm guessing that I probably misunderstood about the 4/2/2008 standard A4 and the RRA representative was really talking about the 16inch mid-length that they'd just talked to us about... I really hate it when someone starts a rumor about guns shipping when they're really not... Oh, wait, that was me, wasn't it...!

Life is too short to get hung up on the delivery of a new AR, though I must admit I started to enter an order or two for some accessories before my logical side took over. I figure it will get here when it get's here. Hopefully, it will be a shorter wait than the 16" versions since there were less 20" ordered and life in general in the gun/bullets/primers market seems to be cooling off some. I actually went into my local gun shop the other day and they had CCI small pistol primers...ON THE SHELF(!!) for 32.99/1000. There was still a 1000 primer limit (per type), but they were there.
In the mean time, I probably have a dozen or more guns in my safe that I haven't shot in years. Maybe I'll take one of those out to the range this weekend and rediscover it. Bullseye_10x |

I'm glad to here of activity by RR on the LAR-8, 20" A4s. Since my orders were plced late last year and at SHOT Show 2009, I guess I still have a looong wait ahead of me. Oh well, maybe I need to dust off something from the safe and go burn a few rounds.
Forest and others, when you get your LAR-8s, keep posting here or in a new thread, please, about what sights, mounts, optics and accessories are working for you on the LAR-8. I think it would be really helpful to eventual have a FAQ that we can contribute to, for after market parts and accessories, optics, sights, and mounts that will work fine on the LAR-8.

He said that RRA called him and told him that they were assembling the rifle and that it would be shipping in 2-3 weeks. I hope I helped you know where you stand on the list if you have one on order. Also, I was hoping to ask about NcStar Scopes. I don't have the money for a $300 scope being that I am in high school. If I could find one that has an acog sort of look to it without the price tag that would be great. If any of you know something about the Mark III series any information would be appreciated.

I would not waste my money on an NcStar, unless they have seriously improved on their quality. The last ones I saw at a gunshow where falling apart in my hands, and these were brand new units.

The 'firefly' recticle can be made to glow in the dark and very easily seen (and not ecessively bright) for up to 2.5 hours if you shine a sure-fire light for about 2 minutes through the objective lens, and have had the rifle laying around in a brightly lit room or ambient sunshine..Otherwise if you just take the scope and rifel out of the gun safe in the dark, the surefire light activation will get the recticle glowing for about 45 minutes. For under $300 its a rugged scope.

Well, returning after a week visiting family in New York and Vermont, it's back in Colorado time...
As I mentioned above, I mounted the Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40mmSF MD scope on this 20inch standard LAR-8A4 rifle using two YHM mini-risers (the wider ones with two screws) and Burris medium matte Zee rings. Everything looks pretty good and the scope is positioned well, eye relief-wise, because the LAR-8 receiver is considerably longer than the LAR-15 one. I might eventually go back and replace the medium rings with low ones (I was concerned that the scope would be too low for a good cheek-weld with low rings, but it doesn't look like that will be a problem). Since the scope sits farther forward on the LAR-8 compared to the LAR-15, the original charging handle is usable, although not quite optimal. I'll be replacing the latch with a Badger Tac-Latch. As soon as I get a chance to put a few rounds through it, I'll report back on how this arrangement works. We received another mid-length LAR-8 at the shop this week, and we have another LAR-8 (probably a mid-length, but we're not sure until it arrives) currently in shipment from RRA. Later... Update -
Three "standard" 20" LAR-8A4 rifles ordered on August 21, 2006. Got the UPS shipping email last night - ONE of them is on the way, set to arrive on Tuesday, and after a call to RRA, it seems that the other two should be shipping within the next week or so. Not too terribly pleased about the shipping window slipping to the right, but the rifles were confirmed to be in production, and there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel that I'm pretty sure isn't a train. On the good news, the RRA High-Rise scope mount I ordered last week is also on the way -FAST service on non-rifle orders! When the rifle arrives, it will meet its mate, a Weaver Classic Extreme 2.5 - 10x50mm with an illuminated German Reticle. Was dubious about this scope at first, but since the tip (they're on super closeout as they are discontinued) came from my local AR-10 guru, and was borne out with my own research, the combination should be VERY nice indeed. Hope to post another update on Wednesday. . . |

Received an LAR-8A4 standard (20inch) yesterday that was ordered on 9/27/2007. As might be expected, our customer immediately drove down from north of Denver (we're in Colorado Springs) to pick it up.
RRA called yesterday to let us know that another standard LAR-8A4 was on the way (but I didn't catch the original order date). RRA called today to let us know that my standard (20inch) LAR-8A4 ordered on 4/2/2008 will ship within the next couple of days...

Received not one but TWO LAR-8's last week. The third of the triumvirate is scheduled to arrive today.
The second rifle was earmarked as "mine," and I took it out to the range on Friday last. Overall impression was very favorable. The rifle has a tight upper/lower fit without being difficult to disassemble, and felt very smooth. Only issue, if you can call it that, is that the trigger is a little harder/heavier than I would have liked. I'd like to see RRA ship these with a match grade trigger as standard. The rifle mated perfectly with the RRA high-rise scope (which, BTW, precludes the use of iron sights). Eye relief and elevation with the Weaver Classic Extreme 2.5-10x50mm was perfect. After sight-in with five rounds of US M118 7.62mm at 20 yards, the target was rolled out to the max of 50m (indoor range. . .what can you do when you live in a fairly urban area?). Three more shots for adjustment, and then two different shooters (myself and one other) popped five rounds each. The total size of the ten round string was a little less than 1" center to center. Needless to say, I'm quite pleased. Now to find a longer range. . . |

In regards to your comment about the trigger, the LAR-8 is supposed to come with the RRA 2-stage match trigger as standard. I know that the one that I am currently playing with has a great trigger. I haven't tried the triggers of any of the other ones that we've had come through the shop. I should also probably mention that I fired 25 rounds through the standard 20inch LAR-8A4 that I have, using the Nikon 4.5-14x40mmSF MD riflescope. The three shot groups that I mostly shot as I sighted the rifle in at 100 yards hovered in the 1.5 inch range, with some bullets in the same hole. I was shooting some pulled down CBC 1975 Ball (lote 12-2.TRIM.1975). I had pulled the military ball bullets, resized the cases, standardized the powder charge and then reseated the bullets and crimped them. This ammo (1975 CBC 7.62x51mm Ball) has been reported to blow up rifles, so play with it with caution. It is beautiful looking ammo. Needless to say, I am very happy so far with the performance of this rifle, given that standard military ball was shot... Later... Forrest |

I'll have to go check the trigger again.
I've spent the majority of the last year shooting a Savage Model 10FCP with an Accu-Trigger, and this trigger's lightness may account for the perceived heaviness of the LAR-8 trigger. More to come. .. |

Turns out that it was indeed me.
The trigger is indeed a two stage trigger, and the break is very clean, and about the same as my RRA Entry Tactical AR-15. I've been spoiled by the Savage Accu-Trigger, and may have to invest in a more finely tuned trigger for this rifle. |

Well, on Thursday (3SEP2009), I received my second RRA standard (20inch) LAR-8A4. This rifle was originally ordered on 2APR2008.
The rifle looks beautiful, with the same snug (but not overly tight) fit of upper to lower that CRUFFLER mentions and that my first LAR-8 displays as well. For those still waiting for standard 20inch LAR-8A4 rifles, it looks like your time will be coming soon. And, if what I've received is any indication, you won't be disappointed .
More when I figure out what to use as sights on this one... Forrest P.S. Since I did reorder a standard 20inch LAR-8A2, I'm still waiting for another one too...

Got a call from Krista at RB Precision yesterday and my 20" LAR-8 is on the way. I ordered it on 3/31/2008, so give or take a day, it was produced at approximately the same time as Forrest's latest rifle that he just received. Hopefully I can get out and shoot it late next week after it arrives and I fondle it for a day or two!!
As a side note, Krista made a comment that this gun was one of the first 100, 20" rifles produced by RRA. Considering how few I've seen on Gunbroker and such, I would not doubt it. Bullseye_10x |
