As an aside to those who are storing powdered pool shock of any variety, be aware that it does decompose over time, releasing Chlorine gas. You might manage to arrest this best if you vacuum sealed the original baggies in heavy mylar or something, but take that with a grain of salt, as the decomposition tends to rot the baggies that it comes in, also.
The reason that I bring it up is because if you're storing these powder packs in the buckets they sometimes come in, or your own buckets, or other sealed container, you may be in for a very nasty surprise if you crack that bucket open after a few years. I work in the pool industry and unfortunately know from experience that chlorine gas exposure is nothing fun. It would be worse in SHTF or TEOTWAWKI when there may be limited or no access to hospitals or EMS services. It's exactly like drowning on dry land. A bucket of powdered pool shock or tablets left to sit for a long time can easily release enough gas through decomposition to kill you. This stuff should be stored cool, dark, and dry. No blazing hot sheds, barns, or garages. Make certain that you open any of this that has been in long term storage outside, in a well ventilated area, upwind of yourself and others. Crack the bucket open and clear the area for a goodly amount of time. The gas can linger around the open bucket for several minutes, and you can walk right into a cloud of it without ever seeing it. Not trying to scare anyone. It's a great thing to keep on hand, but it does pose risks that everyone ought to be aware of. |

I finished up my calcium hypochlorite prep. I ended up stuffing a 1-lb bag of Leslies pool shock into glass mason jars and closing them with plastic lids that I bought from Walmart. I also put some plastic teaspoons and tablespoons in the jars for measuring. I created a label for the jars and glued them on the jars.
