IMHO, D.B. Sweeney (the guy that plays the Ravinwood leader) is a fairly well known actor.  He has starred in several lesser known films and he has co-starred in many others.  He was in Lonesome Dove and he played "Shoeless" Joe Jackson in Eight Men Out.

he was Mike Pinnochio in "Harsh Realm" ... still looks like Tom Green with that goat!

I think he looks more like Ronnie Dunn of the country Duo "Brooks & Dunn".

There seemed to be more than a few SBS's out there, strange item for a small town LE gun arsenal? And if they were privately owned, strange to see only SBSs and not more AWs?

You would be suprised what small towns have.  The town I live in has about 5000 people, and 9 officers.  Every car has an AR and a shotgun (Mossburg I think).  And 2 or 3 SBS's  Our neighboring town has about 2000 people.  All of there police cars have AR's in the trunk, and Benelli M1's up front.  They even have nightvision goggles.

Notice haw everyone is walking or in one of the few older vehicles that run.  Has noone thought about using a horse or a bike?   Sure beats walking.

Couldn't they just get some guys and switch out spare parts of different cars to make a few of them work?  I think they should at least try.

Plus, why didn' the town have some volunteer deputy sheriffs?  Didn't they ever have any large festivals or events where they need extra cops?  What about our troops over seas?  Did all of our foreign bases get hit as well?  Where the hell is NATO?

France and the UK kind of owe us for saving their butts in WWI and WWII I think they owe us a favor.  Unless they got hit as well.

Plus, what about our Navy and Marines at Sea?  There had to be some Marines underway at that time or in the fleet.

To improve the visual contrast when Hawkins is shown with his bad ass sniper rifle.  Remember, this is a TV show, visuality is everything.

SEVERAL of the guys at the roadblock had nekid scope mounts, and NO optic OR irons. one rifle had just the front sight, no rear.

now, in a "normal" world, and not TV Land, we'd expect that those "nekid" rifles had scopes at one point, so they should NOT have been on the bridge, but spread out and with some distnace.

however, it's tee bee, it don't gotta make sense, just gotta look kewl.

Thank you.  They are shitbags and are part of the problem in Iraq.  They have millions of dollars in government contracts, all the weapons and ammo they need, and zero accountibilty.

This has really gone off on a tangent into no where-ville.

Once again, it's a TV show with some hopes of getting people to 'prepare' for what if. The directors knew was a unpopular topic and CBS took a chance airing it. Does it have faults - hell yes. If Jericho would be a true hardcore survival/prep HOW TO step by step episode of what to do post-TSHTF, it would never be on TV period. Accept it, deal with it or don't watch it.  I swear some just watch it just so they can bitch the next day and tell the world "what THEY would have done" behind their keyboards.

Onto the topic of contractors. I personally know several, a couple I wouldn't trust, a couple I would.  Are there contractors out there who are no good? Yes, are some just hired thugs looking to carve out a nice chunk of cash for themselves, yes. Are some good guys/gals YES trying to actually help and assist? Yes.  Are some of those contractors trying to make their families lives back home better? Yup.

Just curious, I don't need to know but how many people who are reading this thread think by just having a firearm and a 'bunch' of ammo will get them past the first week? How many have even practiced a 48hr or 72hr bug out? Tried those backroads during rush hour? Have you even tried cooking meals with your super special survival rations?
There's more to then just having to quote many "bunch" or "a lot" or "loads" of food, water, ammo, firearms in surviving a disaster. How much is that exactly? Enough to feed self and family for a month? That's what I'd consider a "bunch" of food.  Loads? That might equal six months worth. Some social skills are needed. If some local jerk rolls into town saying "need to confiscate the general store, gas station, gunshop and pet store" for the good of the town - who will listen?  Would the city council listen to YOU the AR15.com keyboard commando into city/town defense preps, sheltering in place etc? Hell no.  Are you going to be allowed to walk the streets or go into the stores wearing your most excellent super tactical combat gear and AK/M4 with it's dazling stuff hanging off it. Probably not.  Are many 'stuck' in a city or suburban enviroment who have no clue how a really small town works what to do?

Who's helping the tv town jericho more? Hawkins (staying low profile until needed) or Gray Andersen (I want to be big man in charge), Jake (seems like he's acting pretty reckless myself), Eric the (I'm daddys favorite son).... calling the brunette school teacher a 'mousey gimp' is a joke - she's contrubited more to the town then the stupid "hot blonde".  Let's not forget Gracie and her taking of items worth more then what's inside the store...

It can go on and on.... yup, flame me if you want. I've already realized I'm a ass, but I also realize that Jericho is a TV show made for the Generally dumb public who won't save themself unless told to do so by proper authorities then still refuse because they think the FED.GOV will come to save them and hand out a big fat check so they can buy a new car, new home and new Playstation 3 for their brat kid.

Ahh, nothing like an argument made off of hearsay and ignorance.

But we digress off the topic.  The "media" portrayal of "contractors" is absolutely one hundred percent off, but they fill a good role in the show; that off a well armed group of predators.

Which sounds like the preference of some on this board.

I do love that CBS has made them all available online.

Hawkins is saving this town's ass. Though I wish we knew a bit more about his REAL intentions, so far he is the all-star.

Gray Anderson is the mayor the town needs. Major Dad has done nothing but give speeches. The time for speeches is over, it's now time for action. At least he seems to care about the town's security, even if it is a bit heavy-handed.

Jake is johnny-on-the-spot. I'm interested how he is going to handle organizing the "militia" with his cool WW2 Ranger handbook... ought to be interesting.

Gracie may be "profiteering", but really, the value of objects has changed greatly. While she thinks she's collecting valuable stuff, it's all really junk for the time being. She's just gambling that things will return to normal soon and her junk will gain value. Just like the farmer, she is now in a powerful position because she has things the town needs, so she is taking advantage of it. I can't fault her for it.

The blonde and the mousey brunette: who cares? They are both useless, unless the writers are setting the blonde up to showcase PTSD. If they both died next episode, I don't think many viewers would care.

In the US, gov't contractors are civies, just like you and me.  If they aren't sworn peace officers, treat them like just another gang member, that is what they are.

Now back to the shreiff, so he got smoked early, is there no mechanism to replace your top county LEO if he can't fulfill his sworn duties?

Only the sheriff's office is responsible for security of his county, not the mayor of a small town located in that county (mayor comes under executive power according to the constitution)

TexasYankee,
I have served my country as a armed Contractor in Iraq and served my coummity as a Police Officer for almost 18 years. I have not gotten rich or powerful off of either job nor have I ever abused my authority.

There were some questions regarding whether the Doctor that Jake brought back from Rogue River was Pakistani or Hindu or whatever.  One person picked out that the Doctor had used some Hindi swear words during the episode in Rogue River.  I have consulted my wife on this issue, who is Indian (Hindu) and also an avid viewer of this show.  Approximately 20% of the Indian population is Muslim.  The fact that the Doctor swore in Hindi only tells us that he is Indian.  According to her, there were no other markers in the show to accurately determine whether the character is Hindu or Muslim.  If a definitive answer develops in an upcoming episode, I will update the thread.  Judging by the characters last name on IMDB (Dhuwalia) we will go with Hindu for now.

Police and gonvernment contrators are two seperate subjects. Please fill us in on the great things contractors do. Perhaps blame it on the media, but I've never seen any articles that portray contractors in a good light. It's always two things:

1) They are a budgetary black hole
2) They have no accountability

Look, I don't know enough about PMC's to comment on how good/bad they are, but I don't think you can say you are serving your country (in that context) unless you are serving in the U.S. military.  I think that as a contractor, you are serving your company first and foremost - you work for them and their goal is to turn a profit.

Now, most contractors are former .mil or LE, and if they were .mil before, then they did serve our country at one time and I thank them for that.

That's actually were most people are misinformed.  Contractors working for the US Government are not working for their company, they are working for the US Government. The company is just a middle man for paychecks.  Contractors are independent from the compnay and are US Government ID Card holders.  The companies, in the case of the ones that work US Gov't contracts, are not in the chain of command for anthing other than supplying the paycheck and as a scheduler and initial hiring and clearing organization. The standards are supplied by the US Gov't. This is the case of many of the Security Contractors (Blackwater, Triple Canopy, Dyncorp, MVM specifically)which make up only a few thousand of the grossly overstated numbers that the media espouses. I am only familiar with the security side and not the labor/truck driver side (which by far makes up the vast majority over there)  That being said their are companies that supply security contractors for non-US or Coalition contracts, but you are generalizing about them all and the argument is very misinformed.

In the case of security contrcators working Katrina as an example, many were in fact sworn officers, so they did have some jurisdictional authority to detain.

Anyways, its way off the subject, and I will stop defending it.  (rant off)

Independent how?  Contractually?  I'm being serious here, because I don't know.  I know Blackwater trains its employees.  Does it provide supplies/munitions/logistical support?  Are contractors obligated to take jobs that they are assigned, or do they have freedom to choose their assignments?  There is a world of difference between contractual independence and actual independence.

Finally!! Now we can get Back on topic... Perhaps even talk about what the show is about perhaps and not the hot chicks etc...

Does anyone recall when Hawkins was on the computer looking at a Flagged passport? Did anyone notice whos passport it was?

It was episode 5, I found it very interesting that it was Jakes Passport, and Hawkins told his son that he had to fix something when he was asked what he was doing on his computer...

I also found it interesting that Hawkins told his wife that he wasnt sure how much longer he would be in Jericho, and needed to teach his daughter what he could while he could...

Dunno if anyone was paying attention to those things... But that to me says he is on the job, and expects to be called somewhere...

For the heck of it I watched the episodes again... things I noticed... Jake is 31 years old and been gone for the last 5 years... I didn't see the passport issue date but someone had said he was 17 at the time.

I say Gray Andersen has some deal worked out while he was in Topeka.

They took the geiger counters with them in the north south east west episode - idiots!

Did Gray Andersen kill the Mine guy? Shep??

Loved the conversion of stove to a wood oven. Wouldn't be hard to do, just line the bottom and side with fire brick??

Hawkins doesn't seem like there's a lot of food in that basement... did anyone else notice the cot set up where HIS personal items were??  Wouldn't the cop notice that?

Also, in episode 1 I counted 9 deputies in uniform... now they only have 2 deputies left?  We know that at least 4 were wacked at the prison bus, what happened to the other ones???

Lastly.. what idiot would allow 1/2 your fire dept to travel to Denver where you KNOW it's radioactive yet they have no training in that envirorment???

Lets get this back on topic...

There has been speculation about that.  I think it's relief.

By the way, for all you guys planning on firing up ethanol stills once the big one drops, I heartily recommend you look into butanol instead.

Reasons:
1) it doesn't emulsify water like ethanol does.
2) 100% mixture burns in gasoline engines with no conversion necessary.
3) energy content, per gallon, is about the same as gasoline (where as ethanol is less)
4) process for creating butanol is the same as creating ethanol.
5) saves the ethanol to drink.

Sure there have been some things that were stupid but there have been some cool things also.

I did see a scene where Jake was inside his house, holding a shotgun and talking about what they were going to do about Ravenwood.... and i saw that his finger wasn't on the trigger, but safetly awayfrom it, resting against the reciever.

That was pretty cool seeing that..... maybe the dude is a shooter in real life.

Was there an episode early on that Hawkins went to his storage unit and he had tons of M4's ??

Also I just finished the last episode "Crossroads" Didn't anyone notice (from the town) that Hawkins snuck away, used a super wiz bang suppressed weapon and then returned later that night for bridge guard duty with that regualr old bolt action?

I hope this show doesn't get any more hokey.  Like The Unit.
