I wanted to take a moment to review the rifle im using. Some may note that for centerfire, I've mostly used a savage 110 varmint in .223 with a 26" heavy ( very heavy) barrel. It is wickedly accurate with consistent 0.25" groups off the bipod with my handloads being the norm, not the exception. I doubt it is possible to buy a more accurate rifle. It is however heavy, and as middle age and arthritis kick in, im 61, it is no longer a practical walking around rifle for me. To be practical, I've switched to the AR pictured above for anything between 70 and 200yds. It is a 16" factory Dalton with pencil barrel. Blackhound 6-24x scope, and with my handloads, it is about a 1.75 moa rifle after three shots, but the first two shots are always dead on and for practical hunting, that's really what is needed. With centerfire, I dont need to consistently hit a quarter at 200yds, I need to hit a woodchuck firing one or at most two shots. It does that quite well, and I dont have to take extra Tylenol when I get back to my truck. The vangaurd sitting bipod puts it exactly at the right height to shoot from sitting in my low lawn chair, or retracted a few inches, sitting on the ground. |
