Looking for suggestions for 45-70 ammo for bison. I had planned on using Barnes 300 gr load but was surprised they chronod only 1650 fps which puts it at around 1,100 ft lbs on energy at 100 yards. This was out of a Marlin Trapper. Appreciate the help

Why not the 500 grain hard cast lead?  It worked for decades.  Don't worry about impact velocity, it just penetrates.

Or boring old original load.  400 gr at 1200 fps, IIRC.  It's not like we didn't nearly eradicate Buffalo with black powder rifles or anyyhing.

You don't say what rifle you are using.  If the gun is a Marlin 95 or Winchester 86, a 400 grain bullet over 70 gr 2fg black will absolutely do the job.  If a single shot, a 500-550 lead bullet over 70 gr 2fg black will really do the job.  Fie on hard cast lead; a soft 20:1 bullet is the historical slug that brought bison to near extinction.

The trajectory on those isn’t great.

I've had good results with 420 gr. LFN-GC bullets from Montana Bullet Works.  Accuracy is good, center target at 100, 2-3" low at 200 yds.  I haven't choreographed the load yet, but judging from the thump on my shoulder it's clipping right along.  Powder was reloader 7 from a newish Ruger SBL.

These are 405.

Regular remmy 405 put a big hole in my black bear.
Sometimes something big and slow hits harder than smaller and faster.
