I am looking to buy my first AR and I was hoping to get some experienced opinions on what to go with. I have done my research and want to go with a CMMG Dissent pistol, but I need help on deciding the caliber and barrel length. It's between either a 300 blk in a 6.5" or 10.5" barrel, OR .308 in a 12.5" barrel, I prefer it to be these lengths because I want it to be compact for easy storage in my truck and maneuverability. Some key points: 1. Its main purpose will be for hunting, primarily medium-large hog and occasional deer 2. Power is a factor, I want a quick kill with a shot to the lungs, not just a brain or neck shot 3. It will have a suppressor, but most likely only using supersonics (subsonic hunting I've seen isn't the best) 4. Location will mostly be hunting in Florida, so 200 yards or under for distance Any sort of insight, advice, experience, or flat out answers would be appreciated. Thank you

I've never tried a 12" .308, But the .308 was not designed to be efficient in a short barrel. The .300 BLK was. I use a suppressed 10.5" and 16" .300 BLK to kill hogs, they work just fine with 110 or 125 gr JHP or Ballistic Tips. .308 I would want at least a 16" barrel, preferably a 20". |
| Have a 12.5 inch barrel 308. Shoot 168 Amax. Does great at 50 yards. Does open up at 100 yards. Definitely a thumper. One thing nice about 308 is you can shoot AP rounds, if you can find them. Have a 16 and 20 inch 308 AR too. If your hung up on shorter barrels, consider lighter bullets for better accuracy. Suggest going 14 inch barrel for a minimum though. |

I think your 200 yard max, medium-large hogs, and quick kill prerequisites all rule out anything 300blk regardless of barrel length. Even with the 10.5 you're looking at what 2200fps with a 110 at the muzzle? I'm not terribly excited about the numbers from a 12.5 308 but they're much better than the 300blk and honestly probably closer to a 30-30 than the black ever was. |
