What is the best 2m antenna to hoist into a tree?  I am thinking the roll up j-pole.  Any other choices.

The goal is portability and the ability to throw a line into a tree and pull the antenna up.  Would prefer 2d, so no 3d counterpoise solutions.  To much to get snared on a branch.

Should mention, this is for build not buy.

I built a 2m flowerpot using coax and some pvc pipe. It is hoisted into the tree behind my house and is working phenomenally. Maybe not as portable as you are looking for but definitely more robust than a roll up j-pole.

My roll up jpole is in a piece of pvc pipe. It's tuned for the pipe from ed fong. Great antenna.

Ed Fong is what I use. Works well.

Here is a shot at a Flowerpot, seems much like a sleeve dipole.  SWR is 1.25 at 145.5MHz.  Works ok inside, but not many of my 2m antennas work well inside.  Will try in a tree at 50 ft tomorrow.

J pole in PVC...

If you're building something just make a vertical coaxial dipole. Coax, couple snap-on ferrites is all you need.

It's smaller, less expensive and works as well or better than a J pole.

Ed Fong or N9TAX. I prefer the construction of the N9TAX, but both work fine.

I use a N9TAX rollup for this, works well, so I guess you could get some ladder line, coax, and a fertile choke and make one.

Was easier for me just to buy one, they're cheap.

Another option is a faraday cloth j pole antenna. You can either buy on from https://vfcomms.com/shop/antenna/fara-j-antenna/  or you could build your own.

I tried the coax from the previous pic suspended at about 50 feet with maybe 70 feet of RG-8X coax.  Hit a few nets, 30-85 miles.  I think even a bad antenna is not bad at 50 feet high.

I will build another one for long term home use with better waterproofing and maybe 1-2 more for portable use.

There's no reason for those banana plug parts in there, just need a BNC female, or male and barrel connector.

Ferrites are an alternative to the coil of coax.

Just ordered one, looks like an interesting design.

The best part is it weighs nothing and you can stuff it in your pocket.

Yes, just prototype mode with the banana plugs.  Will remove those.

Got a link or product code for a 10 pack of ferrites?

For FM simplex and repeater access...or weak signal (CW/SSB) work?

If the latter: square loop. Ropes to all four corners, joined at the apex and hoisted from same.

With 30 or 40ft elevation, plays really well for portable contests.

i put a 3” spring lift on mine
it was underpowered on the highway but would go anywhere off road

got much better mileage than my jeep and was more reliable

PS- N9TAX roll up J pole is easy to deploy
