Tried .44 mag - didn't think it had enough power for my liking.
Jumped up to a .450 Bushmaster last year. Unfortunately the weather sucked during our one week gun season and I never put a shot on a deer. What are you guys using in states that have this requirement? |

Two Coshocton county deer down with my Marlin 1895 last year (my first ever successful year deer hunting). Both shot within 50 yards, both never took a step. I can't think of any reason to change up my rifle at this point (for the area where I have hunting permission). |

That rule sucks. What kind of distances are you shooting?
I would think your .44mag or .450 be be pretty decent in Ohio, unless you have some wide open patch of land. |

450 is what a lot of the Iowa guys have gone to recently

Not required but I have been playing with .38-55 in a high wall clone. 265 grain flat nose. It will kill food.

45-70. At least that is what I would get if I were to hunt here in Ohio.

While not a “rifle” I sport a 20ga with a rifled barrel.

I keep hoping to find a .444 Marlin I can afford. Otherwise, a .30-30 bored out to .38-55 is a possibility.

Besides the WTF reasons. Why does this rule exist? What’s the reasoning (however insane) behind it?

The market answered with the 450 Bushmaster, chambered in evil black rifles. It is pretty damn goofy. Missing out on a bunch of effective calibers like 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel....which are legal for coyote and I believe hogs. |

@mcb
Is that stock on your scary black rifle a factory Bushmaster stock? Never seen that one before. |

My gun is a parts gun (old style 450BM upper and some other random parts and I built the lower) but Bushmaster is putting that stock on the current version of the 20-inch 450 Bushmaster rifle from their Minimalist line: (https://www.bushmaster.com/firearms/minimalist-sd/450-bushmaster-sd-carbine). Remington also uses the same stock on the R-25 GII but with camo on it. |

Nice, I like the cheek weld "shelf" they put on it. Kind of like a modern take on a Monte Carlo stock for an AR type rifle.

I’ve used most of the standard calibers and it all boils down to how you hunt and how far you will most likely get a shot. 44 mag works great if you stay within its limits of about 140 yards. I’ve killed 2 with a 44 and had no problems
I have a 45-70 but it’s a heavy pig and really more than what I need. I too built a 450 but didn’t get a deer with it. I did miss and the blast and concussion without ear plugs ruined the rest of the day. This year I’ve built 2 350 Legend uppers to try. I really like this caliber and am enjoying working with it. Not nearly as much blast and recoil. So far they both have proven plenty accurate enough for deer with the 180 grain power points. Best part is about every 2 weeks another factory load comes out to try. My take on the 350 is it’s a very usable caliber for what I want and how I hunt. Best part is it uses almost all standard parts so you only need a barrel and a mag to get an existing upper ready. Really a pretty cheap way to try out a new round. Should make a nice multipurpose deer and yote gun. |

Get the law changed. Think Indiana finally got some standard cartridges approved a couple years ago.

I have a Tromix 458 SOCOM upper that I plan to try this season.
Would that round be eligible? It does have a slight taper. |

I use my Magnum Research BFR in 500 S&W Magnum. Michigan, unfortunately, has a case length limit for the lower part of the state (we have a rifle line for those unaware). If not for that I'd use my Winchester 1886 in 45-70 Govt. The case length limit thing is just so stupid.
I have heard of guys cutting 45-70 cases to meet the limit and hunting with them, but I don't want to play what-ifs. My hope is just that they wise up eventually and do allow stuff like 45-70, 30-30, 450 Marlin, etc. |

I know a few guys who hunt areas above the 'Rifle Line' with their M1 Garands. One of them has a hole-in-the-wall camper up in the U.P. ... he shoots a scrawny deer up there with his M1 every year. LOL! |

My buddy who hunts property in lower MI below the rifle line wants me to go out with him this year, thus I need something that abides by the silly laws. My buddy laughed when I told him I'd be using a handgun. He loves shotguns but isn't too up to snuff on handguns or rifles, so he's in for a surprise when he sees my BFR .500 hand howitzer lol! |

You should get 50 more yards out of a 444 vs a 45/70.
I have both but we shoot deer close where I hunt so no difference. |
|
|
Another vote for 45/70
I don't hunt anymore so I sold all mine-- but amazingly effective cartridge -- I used a MArlin Guide Gun with a 3-9 scope and the Hornady flex tip 325gr bullets. Recoil was brick in that gun but manageable. Recoil from the same cartridge in my old Ruger #1 would detach your retinas in comparison |

A coworker hunts hogs and whitetail with a 450 Bushmaster. The round does the job within 100 yards, but his Radical Firearms AR is a total POS.
