The drone of a low flying plane echoed off the canyon walls. Fred adjusted his pack and looked around to see what it looked like. Nothing could be seen. Soon the sound faded away and the wind picked up. Twenty minutes later as he topped a saddle between the mountains he saw what looked like a parachute stuck in the pine trees ahead of him slightly off the trail. Approaching half expecting a person caught up in the harness he was surprised to see only what looked like a large stuffed duffel bag dangling a foot off the ground. No markings or names. He soon had it open. It was stuffed with plastic wrapped wads of hundred dollar bills… |

He sat there looking at it and then he closed the flap and sat with his head down. His whole life was sitting there in front of him. Day after day from dawn till dark until he was dead. All of it cooked down into forty pounds of paper in a satchel. |
"I'm telephoning you from a café about 10 miles south of Mesurier, and I wondered if you could do me a favor."

He immediately scanned the surrounding area as he knew someone would come to collect the money, and that someone would be dangerous, very dangerous. He knew he had little time, could be minutes or hours, but a decision had to be made; keep moving and pretend this never happened, or take the money and have his life changed forever, and not necessarily in a good way. He knew several men in this small, border county that had been in this same position; parts of a few of the men were found strewn about, the rest of the men were never seen again. Like that nanosecond between closing your car door and realizing your finger is still in there, his mind ran different plans and scenarios in that short amount of time, none involve sitting on a beach drinking Corona: who knew he was here today, who knew he like to hunt here, cell towers, traffic cameras? He had to assume the owners of the cash had tentacles into every method and mode of tracking money, people movement, and local police. Cell phone - in his pocket, traffic cams- he drove to the parking lot, think dammit, think... Lena at the diner knew he was coming here, Marv too, who else? Then, without warning..... |

He was aware of his heart beats. Sweat began to trickle down his face. Ignore it and live… steal it and face potential retribution or worse, kick off a war between factions that suspect each other of double crossing. Or pilfer as much as he dares in the hope that spoilage is acceptable? He crouched down. Someone will eventually know or suspect he was involved… unless… |
