Really good net tonight.  I copied all 100% on the emergency set-up, even though some were ghost copy.

Thanks for running such a great net, Sir!

Fantastic turnout considering where we've been the past few weeks.

Thanks for taking it on, GreenDragon!

I should be around to NC this week's net. Hopefully the remote tuner has dried out from the snow.

I heard NCS on warnings. Signal for preamble is very strong, but no decode

I checked with my phone, it's decoding fine here, I left the station running on remote when I had to leave and finish up dinner for the kiddos.

I dropped my output about 25W in case I was over-driving.

Can you explain in small words what you mean by that?  I was running 35w today.

Nice net, conditions were very good but got pretty variable towards the end.
I had solid 100% on everyone even with the big swings on the S-meter.

7 check ins plus NC tonight.

Winds gust up to about 60mph whipping my antenna around may be a reason for my signal fluctuating.

Here is what works for me, running an IC 7300, set the power out to 100 watts. This is an indicator adjustment on the 7300 screen.  Then, adjust the audio level to drive the transmitter to 50 watts out, I do this from the audio control panel on the computer. This keeps the ALC circuit in the rig out of the picture and provides good linearity for digital modes. hth

Thanks! I am on the FT-710 and have been running volume on the PC Audio out at about 80% and using the radio output at 25-45 watts depending on my assessment of conditions.  Will need to read up on the ALC and give your method a try.

@DarkLordVader
Sounds good, the 100 watts would be what the output is in CW mode "key down". On my rig the ALC is indicated by a linear graph on the screen. This is used in SSB mode and the general notion is that the ALC reading does not go above the top of the scale. In digital modes, the radio needs more linearity, that is an accurate reproduction of the tones being sent. The sent tones are to be translated back into the characters we see on the screen, hence the need for clarity. Again, I always use the audio drive to set the power out and not display any ALC indication. Watch the ALC in SSB mode to get used to the notion. Come to think of it, I do the same thing in SSB mode by adjusting the microphone level.  HTH

I don't know how I have missed this thread. I have to get off qrz and get in here more. I am just checking that FLdigi is still the preferred free software to use? I had problems with it a few years ago and haven't used it since.

Still running FLDIGI here, I recommend FLRIG as well as it will do the job keying FLDIGI, there is a box to be checked in FLDIGI. Setup up FLRIG first. In FLDIGI you will have to pick out your audio program and set levels when setting up TX. It helps to get the receive audio working first. hth

Question: This schedule is for Wednesdays starting 0000Z/1900ET? Are there scheduled times for each band, or just float around depending on conditions? Considering the first post was made Jan 12, 2021, I just want to make sure things haven't changed? And new to flrig & Olivia so 7120 actually means, for example, on 40m middle of 7121.5?

Primary band 40M digital guard channel and net frequency
Mode: Olivia 16/500
Primary Frequency: 7120KHz USB + 1500 waterfall

Secondary Frequencies
Mode: Olivia 16/500
20M: 14067.5KHz USB + 1500 waterfall

Mode: Olivia 16/500
80M: 3586KHz USB + 1500 waterfall

@TimeIsMoney

Everything is still correct, we don't change things much.

There is usually only one band in use, though sometimes we'll experiment and do one then another.

Our primary band is 40M and it is used for most of the year, we switch to the 20M secondary frequency
in the summer. The 80M frequency hasn't been used for a few years since we're nearing the peak of
the solar cycle rather than the bottom where 80M works OK in the winter.

7120 + 1500 means 7120 dial frequency on the radio in USB mode, 1500 Hz audio frequency on the waterfall
on FLDIGI or HRD or whatever you're using. This puts the center frequency of the carrier at 7121.5, but that's
not where you tune, you need to be on 7120 USB to get the signal to be at 1500 Hz for the audio to decode.

So haven't used oiliva or FLrig before. Actually uninstalled FLrig years ago. Seems buggy. I get no alc coming out when transmit on flrig. I switch to js8call and works fine. I may have a few things to iron out before I can join. Using 705, thought I had it dialed in when I installed it the other day. No joy, no signal.

Dang, 40M is on fire tonight, couple stations are S9+ here (and sounds like for others) and I'm seeing +10dB SNRs.

NC was BARELY heard, and that was spotty. Most times signal was below the noise floor.

Caught KD6UY 59, KD9PPO same, N9IEW off and on...no one else heard.

Was also hearing voice and at least one CW signal, so maybe there was just too much junk for fldigi to figure out.  [/shrug]

Probably just unusual propagation. Olivia laughs at QRM so I doubt it was that unless it was just
blasting you radio's front end to the point of it being deaf to anything else.

You can play around with the gain and max value on the waterfall too if it's all black but you know you are getting audio in. I tune over to the FT8 section of the band where there are lots of signals all the time. Plenty of places the audio level might also be low, at the radio output, the sound card mic input level, in fldigi etc.

@limaxray
FLDIGI can be a bit daunting, no doubt. I've included a screen shot of my OLIVIA setup, note the squelch bottom right and water fall adjustments, up one row bottom left. The squelch will limit what can be decoded if it is too aggressive. The incoming signals will show as a green vertical line, this needs to be above the squelch slider for it to decode properly. The water fall settings adjust the viewed intensity of the displayed signal. This will need to be balanced with the actual receive and transmit audio levels set in the audio adjustments of the sound card levels. I run the radio output power setting at 100 watts in CW mode for example and adjust my audio in digital modes for 50-60 watts output. I run filters on the radio at 500Hz, the audio center frequency of the filters is important. on my IC 7300 its 1500 Hz. On the waterfall, the red bar and vertical lines denote the pass band of the audio signal, as you see, it's centered over 1500 Hz. hth

Is anyone here besides me using the Ham Radio Deluxe DM780 digital program?  To me, it's the only way to go and easily justifies the one-time cost for the HRD license.  I've been using it for many years with very few glitches (usually after a major Windows update).

I tried using FLDigi and FLRig a few times many years ago, but it was just way too glitchy and complicated for me.  I gave up.  The HRD DM780 is virtually trouble-free, every week.

The only other program I use is wsjtx and I don't need ham radio deluxe to run that. I use wfview for wireless on my 705. But FLdigi gave me problems yesterday. It was setup correctly, because earlier I was sending out signals just to test before the net. Then nothing. I closed both FLdigi and FLrig multiple times along with radio. Nothing would work. Switched over my presets to JS8Call, everything worked perfectly.

I was able to copy all stations on my house rain gutter antenna.  NC could at least copy me.  It gives me about a 2.3:1 SWR, but I can tune it to 1:1 with the built in tuner in the FTDX3000.  Good to know it can work in a pinch.  Next week I'll try it on the IC-7200 go-box and battery power.
