I've got an M40a1 gasmask and the strong rubber smell of it makes my chest tight wearing it, and that's after years of outgassing too (with and without the second skin on it).Which is strange since it's mostly made of silicone rubber and isn't that pretty much scent free?
I can use it if I have to, but it's preventing me from practicing with it.

I've got an Israeli kids gasmask, and it doesn't smell very much at all.
So obviously there's some difference in rubber composition between masks.

Has this been a problem for anyone else?
Any recommendations for less smelly gasmasks?

Thanks.

Don't buy MSA's "hycar" rubber masks.

The Scott/Kemira masks were great, but now discontinued, at least in the US.

I have some 3m half masks which are fine, that's probably a good bet.

FF-402 has had a lot of good reports, seems to be a good mask.

The 6000 series "DIN" models have both 3m twist lock and a 40mm threaded filter ports for flexibility in filter compatibility.

The FF-402 that I got was much, much more comfortable to wear for any length of time than the 6800 I had before that. Both were pretty easy to breathe thru due to the twin filters. The FF-402 that I got also had a "passive speaking diaphragm" so people could hear me. With the 6800, I could yell and people really couldn't hear me.

Speaking diaphram/voicemitter makes a big difference in usability.

Wash it, they are made to be cleaned.  Mild soap and water.  Will improve it a bit.  Dry it out with a towel then air dry some more.

If you don’t clean them, you then get to re-experience whatever chemical agent it was last used in, so you always want to clean them after using them in real life…

If you get hazing problems on the clear sections of a mask, you can use rubbing alcohol to clean it off.  Won’t last forever, but it works temporarily.  Some masks have that issue more than others.  Never had it with my Scott, but did with others.

And yeah - speaker inserts help for comms.
