ND has a season? I never knew any state had a season. Is there are reason? Ohio is in season 24/7/365, any weapon, any caliber, no bag limits. Kill em all. |

No: What a lot people aren't realizing is if there is a season, like in my state, the population will be at the highest it will be all year at the opener unless weather is a factor killing them before it opens. This means lots of young coyotes as well as other coyotes. Of course, every coyote removed, is one less that can be called in. The other factor or reason I say No, is lots of people will use the same sounds and sequences regardless of time of year, weather conditions, etc. I try to figure out what "trigger" is strongest in a night for the coyotes whether it be social, territorial, hunger, mating, etc. When I find a sound or a few that are working, I will continue to try and narrow it down to find the most impactful sounds on any hunt. This could change the next time out or even during the night. I am a firm believer every coyote can be called in but the art of the sport is finding that sound or sounds. Yes: During the deer gun season, I see coyotes react a lot different to trucks and even the brake lights of trucks. They are conditioned, so that translates to danger to a coyote. Also, the more times hunters call in coyotes and don't kill the coyotes, yes this can condition the surviving coyotes to do things like circle at 400-500 yards, etc. Also, different triggers are stronger depending on various factors, so the coyote might be curious and again acts a lot more cautiously. Case in point, I recently had a coyote who was curious but wasn't willing to finish for me. I used a rodent squeak, which is about as non-aggressive type of sound as a person can use. That coyote turned immediately and left at full stride and acted as if I shot at it. To me, that is a conditioned coyote. Apparently, someone had used that same sound and not finished the deal and it triggered it as danger. Now, when rodents are a major part of a coyote's diet, I have no idea how it knew that rodent was dangerous vs all the rest, but it did. However, I feel the term pressured coyotes is often an excuse so hunters feel better about a poor hunt. Here is one more example. I recently was out and killed 21 coyotes in 5 stands. There will be videos showing this in the future. That may be the best 5 stand stretch I have ever had including a quad, triple, quint, quad, quint. Now, I was out 1 week later with very different conditions and for whatever reason, I could not find the right sound (trigger) on that night and only ended up with 2 in 5 stands. This was in a totally different area and I know the population was decent because of coyote sign, etc. Some nights are simply tougher than others. |
