| ok im picturing mass riots or zombies running around and your inside, what happens if people put a lock on your door because you wont come out. is there an escape hatch or hidden door only secured from inside. all those exterior locks make an easy way to get accidentally locked in. |

| Great thread. I have been researching it myself for a while and figured, has anyone of ARFCOM tried this? Sure enough, ARFCOM does not disappoint. Did you pick up any reference material dealing with contruction techniques and working with the containers? Any off-web reading material you found useful or could recommend? Yet, I can't find what you paid for the raw containers! Would you mind re-posting that info - and where you got them (from whom), and what it cost to have them delivered. A set up like that (or similar), could be the answer to my storage problems - leaving much-needed room in/under my place for . . . . more "valuable" stuff. (?) Thanks. Oh . . ! And, uh . . . super job! Congrat's!

Whoa it has been a while since I checked in here. I have not been doing much on the container
building but I have busy with the plans for future ones. I'll first answer a few questions I missed. AC I have a portable AC unit that I deploy when i have to occupy the bunker. Its a 7000 btu portable that gets it cool real quick. Wind genny was a little over $400 delivered. I got it off ebay. On a side note here my inverter and the controller crapped out I am sending them back for repair. I lost some good winter winds because of it. I hope to get it back up soon. ISO containers are 8 feet wide. Recent updates. Not much I did add a door closer to the bunker door so it will hold open and close by itself. I need a bigger one for the door to the genny room next. Nope there was no open house...maybe someday opsec pending : ) Most of my time has been spent obtaining and assembling a vehicle (yes I built a truck just to do this kinda of stuff) that will allow me to build shipping container buildings in remote areas with out grid power. I found a decent 3/4 GMC for cheap and equipped it with a flatbed and tool boxes. It has what I need to modify containers in the field. I used the truck for the first time this weekend to cut/weld some fence. Other than the addition of some critical tools I forgot, it worked well. I promise some updated pics soon. I have to clean up from the truck project : ) recent additions military strong box 
new security lighting to replace noisy metal halide units. 
Pics of the container building truck 2001 GMC 2500HD. It was bought as a cab chassis. It was a former bobcat service truck. 151k beat miles It appeared to be a hunk of junk. I got it for a steal. A water pump,o2 sensor, and a few gaskets and the truck has turned out to be a nice one. I had bought the bed already assembled from a firm going out of business. The whole truck has turned out nicer than planned. All I need now is some bug out land and a few containers.

And, uh . . . super job! Congrat's! container prices probably vary widely depending on how close youare to a port for used ones, to pretty similar +/- shipping for as new or new ones. I bought some pretty beat up but still weathertite (almost mostly) super cubes for 9000$ for two. pretty heavy, but lots of storage. and not really much more expensive than the little 28 footers. oh, i think the super cubes or high cubes are 8 wide by 48 long and they might even be a foot higher than normal. edit- they are 9.5 tall or 9ft 6 in number two- do some calling in your area for prices; http://www.buyerzone.com/local2/c/PA/Lancaster/Storage-Containers.html |

I think I came once or twice for each page of epic updates on your project, I've had the idea of using either these type of containers or getting a huge dumpster and welding a roof on it and reinforcing to create one myself. Once I have the money I fully plan on such a project. Probably a 40' footer and a 20' under it in the ground. For the 20' I'd weld 2"x2" frame rails spaced 12" on center around the whole thing and then spray on truck bedliner or go with a thick coat of the camper roof coat as you have. Have a regular basement foundation poured just slightly bigger than the container and a few feet deeper, Set that bad boy in and back fill with dirt or if you want to get cute fill it with more concrete. On the inside for the ceiling I'd weld in 2"x4" beams like you have for your genny room as extra roof support. The main opening would be inside the 40' container set on top of it. For a second opening I'm thinking I could get my hands on some of the 6' diameter concrete drain sections used for sewers and run it from one of the sides out 20 foot or so and either have a connecting (lockable)manhole cover going up to a couple feet above ground level or if I build on a hill then just open. Which would mean I'd have to have the door where the pipe meets it be really freakin reinforced. I'd also have to devise in a drain w/ backup sump pump for an underground escape. Now all I have to do is convince the wife I'm totally sane and stuff!

Very nice setup! I haven't read the entire thread, but have you addressed the vibrations coming from the wind generator? These vibrations may weaken the support structure over time. I have found this in my travels as a ham operator. Aluminum antennas will literally vibrate themselves to death.

I was thinking about the vibrations myself. I would probably get hard rubber or urethane and cut some washers out of it and place them on each side of the main bolt where he has the pivot point bolted. Plus some on each of the guy wires. That would reduce vibration a bunch. I'd also think about trying to use car undercoating or something on the guy wire cables to help protect and maybe reduce a little more vibration.
Only other way to reduce it any would be a rubber gasket where the wind generator bolts to the mast. |

The sort of thing that's used in car suspensions, perhaps? |
