Guys this apple tree is about 1-1/2 years old since I planted it. I pruned it today following this guys video as much as possible: How to Prune Apple Trees #pruning #apple Question is, the limb lowest on the trunk to the left. Should I cut that off at the trunk? If you look closely you can see it has some damage up near the top of it. I mow this yard so it’s not feasible to have some limbs growing out too low. Attached File Attached File |

There is another much older Golden Delicious apple tree down in the corner along that fence. But I bought this Grimes Golden, it is self fertile and somewhat frost resistant. A bunch of trees is not desired on this 1/2 acre lot with a house, building and garden. |

My reasoning is as follows: 1-You can always take stuff off. You can't put it back. 2-I save all good wood that is well-placed within my desired form when a tree is this young because I don't know what's going to happen to other wood and I might end up needing it. 3-It will spread out eventually but it doesn't look like it will get in your way mowing this season. So you've got time to figure out if that limb is useful or not. 4-I think it needs that limb for balance.

I cut it just below the damage a few days ago. I have a peach tree on the other side of the lot across from this one. It’s budding out now. This apple tree hasn’t even started so I can see why it is somewhat frost resistant. We can have frost here well up into May. |

Here in Southern KY we have been in the 70s and next week we're dropping into the 20s. Everything is budding and leafing out this week. Gonna get some damage.
