| Looking for a good, solid spinning reel. I don't like baitcasters and they don't like me, so none of those. Not fishing for deep sea monsters but usual cats in the 5-15lb range, with possibility if lucky in the 20-30lb range. Already have a good rod for it. Thanks |

For fish in the under 25ish pound range, you don't need any thing special. You get into the blues in the over 50lb range and you'll need some heavier more expensive stuff. Heavy rod(you don't need 'feel'). Heavy line. Any 2000-6000 size reel you can afford. I like Okuma reels. Shimano, Diawa, and others are good. Stay away from bargain bin junk reels...you should be fine. I really like the Okuma Avenger ABF-4000 for catfish in that range. |

I fished for years with Walmart special Shakespeare spinning combos. Couldn't afford anything better then and never gave it a second thought. Big blues, flat heads, and channel cats didn't care. Moved to South Alabama about five years ago and got into pier fishing for big reds and black drum. Went crazy trying to decide what rods and reels to buy. Settled on Penn Wrath Size 6000 combos. They worked really well so I bought 8000 sized Wrath combos that's also had no problems at all with 30-50lb fish. I've since added some Penn Fierce III combos to the mix as well with no issues either. |
| The last couple years I have went with whatever has been on sale at Bass Pro, last year they had the Shimano Nasci on sale for like $80, the larger sizes like the 4 or 5000 are usually the last to sell, I usually spool them up with 10-12lb test and call it a day, much like you I am not chasing river monsters just channels in local lakes and rivers. |
