I'm incredibly ignorant about electricity and electronics. Do devices like this actually provide any protection for a vehicle from an EMP, or is it snake oil?
Some of the Amazon reviews for this guy's products are ADAMANT that they afford no protection, but I can tell by the way they write that they do not have PhDs in electrical engineering (or anything, for that matter).
Does anyone have any insight? I do not have the wherewithal to tell if this is a con job.
Don't worry about it. Move on with your life. Enjoy it. People have been believing the end of the world is around the corner for thousands of years. And guess what, it isn't. Why would it now?

I'll wait for the government to come rescue me if something bad happens, like a real man would.
Your 35,000-volt spark plugs put out a shitload more EMP than any hypothetical EMP blast.
Yet somehow your car doesn't fry itself. Figure that out, and you have your answer.
Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.---John Adams
In the case of cars, a solar storm won't necessarily have much of an impact on them because they are not connected to long wires (unless you have an EV). A nuke EMP could cause problems with a vehicle but if there's a nuke burst, WW3 has begun and you'll likely have bigger issues than having to shut off and restart your car.
EMP as a destructive force (destroying electrical generation, destroying wired communications networks, ect...) is typically amplified from long cables lines and typical automotive systems don't have miles of wires gathering & feeding voltage spikes into the electronics.
What real EMP effects are is pretty different from Hollywood EMP (everything in any way electric all turn to bricks in an instant).

In the Vietnam war, the US Air Force developed a system to locate North Vietnamese cargo trucks hidden in the jungle at night on the Ho Chi Mihn Trail called "black crow" that detected & directed to the location of the electrical disturbances from unshielded spark plugs & ignition coil systems of the East Bloc Trucks.

That's junk, Having worked "Real" military aircraft that were EMP, TMPST and lightning protected and part of the test teams that certified the systems for 30 plus years, this is truly first class trash.
