another possibility, just spending your $$$ lol, is a 360* camera. get one that runs on usb-c with at least a 1 TB card, so it can record 8+ hours. it's not exactly security, but it's nice to document any encounters, 2 or 4 legs trashbags? extra TP? spare socks? misc batteries (AA, 123, 2032)? usb or 12v fans? those nano camping towels? flip flops for camp, if you're wearing boots during day? fyi, AI has instructions for iguana jerky if you can make a dehydrator. or bbq |

Is that one of the larue cases for your AR? Otherwise I’d pack some money and no other stuff. If you get to the point of “damn I wish I had my ……” you will know what you need. Order one.

ROCK6 I think we would all love to see a list of what’s in that kit. I have a week long trip to Montana (staying in hotels the whole time). I know I carry a lot of what’s in your kit but I would like to enhance mine. Plus I just happen to have a good sized Pelican case that is looking for a job. |

Ironically, we are always fiddling with our trailer, so we still do the "wish we had that..."  Normally, we travel with a day-hike bag, trekking poles, and enough stuff for a night or three on the trail, but this trip is more snorkeling and paddle boarding mangroves. | Beautiful setup OP. Organized and easy to access. I have something similar. I need to take pics though. I've graduated from an SBR down to a PCR. I now pack my MP5 on trips, and even do a modified setup if we go to a hotel (have you seen the movie "No Escape"?). It packs well and is much easier to use. thanks OP. great post. |

Mine are about 5 years old. And you should ALWAYS have at least a dozen hooks, a few flies, and some fishing line stashed away in your personal kit. They take up basically no room and weight. One of those mini ziplock baggies and stash it in the bottom of some kind of hard container - altoids tin or something. |

Some observations for a few additions. Granted, this is region/seasonally focused, so think Southeast in the summer, anything from camping near the AT or Cohutta National Forest to paddle boarding around the mangroves in the FL Keys or boondocking in the Ocala National Forest. It would mostly stay in my truck with my traditional get-home bag to augment certain aspects or get added to our camping trailer on trips. It’s a contingency kit, so outside of testing and training with some of the gear, it’s not the main focus for our activities. It’s an academic and mental exercise in contingency preparations. Here’s what I’m considering on adding: • Topo/road map (Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer) for Florida (and updated on for Georgia) • Leather gloves (I have some Mechanix gloves, but would like thicker leather) • Fishing Kit/hand reel, maybe some snares… • Suppressed .22LR (likely my TX22 Compact, mags, and ammo with chest holster) • Dutchwear gear Halfwit hammock (partial bug net) w/ suspension • Add a dedicated rain fly for the hammock • Add my iRay thermal monocular • Add dedicated battery power bank (we have several with our trailer, but I would want to keep one with this box) • If room, add a mechanical water purifier (MSR Guardian). My wife has some type of drinking bottle with capillary filter (knock off of the Katadyn BeFree filter). It works great in clear water but doesn’t do much more than offer drinking from the bottle. My Grayl is excellent for what it is, but the capacity limits it to really one person. I have a capillary filter (can’t remember if it’s the Sawyer Squeeze or Platypus Quickdraw), but they’re not going to handle water around urban areas very well. The MSR Guardian is robust with great output volume, much better for two people in a variety of conditions/water sources. Bring a pair of good trekking shoes. I usually have them, but given the location and activities, I was rocking sandals and one pair of Merrell water shoes. If we had to travel on foot even for a few days, a good pair of shoes would have been sorely missed. Including socks. My feet are pretty solid and I could go some distance in a quality pair of Bedrock sandals over a variety of terrain, but they’re not the best option for sustained traveling or traveling in low light. I’m really kicking myself for not bringing my new hand fishing reel. Not so much to catch fish, but to practice casting; and I had plenty of opportunities on the paddle board. I’ll get it added in as that was its purpose. I may add a few Speedhook fishing snares and of course some more fishing hooks. If there’s room, a small gill net also comes in handy and I was also thinking about a frog gig and some small game snares. I just need to keep it small and compact. I don’t know if I keep the Yacare in there or the custom fixed blade. I may play around with it since I normally have a good, fixed blade with my day pack, I may not need anything that robust. The small Granfors Bruk Outdoor Axe was a last-minute addition, I may or may not keep in this particular kit, but it does come in handy for processing small stove firewood, which brings me to considering adding a small folding stove kit. I have a Vargo BOT pot, 110g isobutane fuel canister and small stove, but keeping a natural fuel stove fed is easier than an open fire and provides a smaller signature. Something to consider. The case is heavy. So, it’s a grab and toss in the car/truck or quickly offload to a pack type of kit, not something you want to run a few miles with carrying it. It’s a concept and experiment to a layered approach for what we do and what I already keep handy. ROCK6 |

Great kit! On the water filtering, any of those are prob a good start but all of them would benefit from a steri-pen UV treatment post filtering. Oh and if going deep into fl you may want a Spanish-English dictionary Do you have something to sharpen all those knives? A whet stone is heavy but maybe you can find a lightweight alternative. For camp lighting, LUCI lights by mpowered are awesome. They weigh practically nothing and take up very little space and are solar powered. I used to give them away all the time but then they raised the price from like $10 to $50. I actually have that in my day pack that always comes long on these trips. I have a Gray in the box, but I also keep a Grayl in my daypack as well (two is one). Water (carry and decon capabilities) are pretty high on my checklist  Since I'm a self-proclaimed knife whore, yes, field sharpening is always part of my kit. I have double sided DMT diamond sharpener along with what I consider one of the better field sharpeners: Guided Field Sharpener Along with the knife maintenace stuff, I have my weapons cleaning kit in my travel AR case as well:      Interesting on the Spanish-English dictionary. My wife and I flew into Costa Rica last year, rented an FJ Cruiser 4x4 with rooftop tent and camping gear and did a little "overlanding" tour (wife did the itinerary) for a couple weeks. I can stumble my way through Spanish pretty good, but her translator app is actually very effective to having an almost simultaneous Spanish to English conversation. We have camp lighting covered with the trailer, but to be honest, when we backpack it's bed time when the sun goes down I have several headlamps. I recently picked up a couple of the Pathfinder UL Scout Headlamps (Dave Canterbury's site) and found out they were just branded Sunblesa H11 USB-C rechargeable headlamps with white, red and green LEDs. I'm normally not a USB-chargeable only flashlight guy, but these are pretty decent for the price and functionality. The only different with the Pathfinder branded version is that you can replace the headband with a Velcro backing that will allow it to attach to any ball cap that has those (stupid) Velcro patches on the front. It actually works very well in that configuration. Along with our larger solar panels, I do have some smaller ones I pack along that are more portable. ROCK6 |

That field sharpener looks awesome! I might need that. I’ll toss this out for your AR cleaning kit. Been using it for decades in my pack for emergency use at PRS and field matches. Sure beats boresnake. https://www.atsko.com/rapid-rod-gun-cleaning-rod/ All the joints make me not want to use it on the regular as i don’t want those scraping the throat or crown. I also have the heavier duty ProShot Emergency Cleaning Rod, which is shipped with a brass tip meant to clear you bore but can take all their other cleaning bits. I really like the form factor, but it’s best used for full size rifles and heavier than that rapid cleaning rod. I’ll need to check my small tool kit, but I have several Fix-It-Sticks stuff. I only have a Compact ACOG and WML on the AR pistol, so a torque wrench may be overkill for this shorter-term setup. Great suggestions! Updated and expanded layout to follow… ROCK6 |

As long as we have access to decent water sources and a day or two of sun every other day, we can live comfortably off-grid for a 2-3 weeks. This isn't really a survival rig, it's my wife's fun trailer (yep, her idea and many of the upgrades). Bikes, paddle boards, and sometimes kayaks, having fun in the sun, on/in the water, or hiking/biking to a spring or waterfall. Okay, on to the kit experimentation. I do have a large poncho tarp for a shelter, and we have hammocks and othe camping gear. What would be in your portable contingency box? Looking to challenge myself as an exercise in preparing for a situation that will likely never happen ROCK6 which box is this? |

There's a balance as I do have another used Pelican case that is bigger with wheels and a pull out handle, but even the size I'm using, you can over load it to the point that it's heavy as fuck and not easy to manage. I will be refining and assessing. Again, the contents are things that would augment my typical travel/camping kit. There is some redundancy I may need to reevaluate, but I didn't intend for this as a stand-alone kit, hope that makes sense. ROCK6 |

Great thread, wish I had found it sooner. Very well thought out Rock 6. Nothing to add, between what you have and what you know, if you can get 8 hours sleep and hydrate you pretty much got it made. The hydrate part is always concerning when traveling too, and there is not much better than the Grayl in terms of dealing with toxic water when you don't have choice. Biologic is easy with chemical or boiling, it's traveling and not being in the backcountry that is concerning for me for water. Grayl stays in the edc backpack. |
