| To you hunters out there, what muzzle devices do you use on bolt gun hunting rifles? I usually hunt with my savage model 10TR, which has a heavy barrel, and I attach my Saker762 to it. I picked up a cheap savage axis 308 SR that I wouldn’t care about getting beat up, and it’s got a medium taper threaded barrel. I added a SiCo flash hider for attaching my suppressor to it, but honestly the weight of the suppressor would throw of the balance because the stock is cheap AF. Should I just buy an A2 flash hider and be done with it? Just looking to see what others do so I can copy it |

I don't see the need for a (non-NFA) muzzle device on my hunting rifles. I went direct thread for my 30 caliber and 22LR cans. If I'm not shooting suppressed, I use a thread protector just in case. However, I could see where it might be different for hog hunting with an AR or if you're shooting prone at prairie dogs and don't want to kick up dust. |

I don't have any muzzle devices on any of my hunting rifles. When Ruger introduced the 450 Bushmaster they offered it in a 16 inch barrel with a muzzle brake. My friends soon found out firing this cannon from a box blind was devastatingly loud. Even with earplugs. I ordered a Ruger American with a 22-in barrel that seems to be much quieter. |

I don’t use any muzzle devices on any of my hunting rifles, except for my .243 and that is because it is suppressed. Maybe, I would consider an A2 if I was going to be shooting prone, but….. other than my .243, nothing has a threaded barrel. I do some dangerous gas hunting in Africa, and while a lot of people are tempted to put muzzle breaks on their DG rifles, it is discouraged. Sometimes a guide may need to take a VERY quick follow on shot, and the don’t want anything to mess up their sight picture. I have never needed one to do so, but once we actually planned on double tapping a hippo at 7 yards. We did not want a water recover at night in croc water. Didn’t happen though, we were in thick brush and all of a sudden we realized we had lost track of the other two hippos and GTFO |
| I’m asking because I’m trying to tame the recoil on a Savage axis. I’m very used to 308, it’s just the crappy stock makes it snappy. My other option is just putting a Boyd’s stock on it, but I would rather just put something on the muzzle. It has a SilencerCo flash hider for my Saker, but the heavy barrel makes it crazy front heavy. |
| I read the original post. I would suggest a lighter can, the saker is a good can, also a heavy duty can that's made for a high firing schedule. Look into the rugged alaskan (alaskan ti if you really want it light), griffin explorr, silencerco scythe I think is their new light one. I don't think a 7.62 has nearly enough recoil to justify the increase in noise from a brake and I don't know how much good a flash hider would do unless you just want it for cool points. |

Bare muzzle for sure. A flash hider is pointless on on a hunting rifle, especially an A2, it doesn't even reduce recoil. A real muzzle brake does work well, but it has so many drawbacks. Besides being loud, it's blowing all that gas around. If you shoot prone, now it's blowing dust and everything else when ideally you want to see where the animals goes. You can add a shroud to fix it, but that's even more weight. There's nothing at all wrong with a bare muzzle. It's the lightest weight, and zero bulk. I know you said you don't want it, but I would really consider one of the smaller titanium suppressors out there, direct thread. No need for special mounts which only add weight and length. There are options under 10 ounces, and add minimal length. A TBAC Ultra 5 for example is only 8 ounces, and 5" long. A Walberg Husky S30TI is only 7 ounces and 5.5" long. A Diligent Defense Enticer S-TI is 9 ounces and 6 3/4" long. Yes they are a little louder than some bigger options out there but they are a whole heck of a lot better than a bare muzzle, plus they reduce recoil to boot. |

If you’re not throwing a can on it there’s no reason for a muzzle device. My 308 bolt gun has a brake, but only because I use a can with it. None of my other bolt guns have anything on the muzzle. FYI, if you’re hunting with a guide they will hate you for using a brake. Some don’t allow them at all. |
| I run a Weatherby muzzle brake on my 300 PRC, I do not have any muzzle device on my 6.5 PRC or 6.5 CM simply because I don't think the recoil is heavy enough to need them. |

Built it with a lightweight Tromix barrel and used a 3/4" urethane KickEez pad. It was stout but not uncomfortable. Attached File |

If not a lighter can, then look at compensators. I've had a couple of the older Griffin comps on ARs and even on 5.56, there was a noticeable difference in sound/feel from an A2 birdcage type. |

I have Weatherby muzzle brakes on my 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC, anything less then those is pretty much just for show. Oh, the 458 Socom gets one because I need my shoulder. In the end it is up to you and your tolerance level. Yes, I used to have brakes on .223s but perhaps all the abuse I have put my shoulder through all these years has killed off enough of the nerve endings I don't bother anymore. If shooting at the range there is always the Yankee Hill factor to consider (anyone remember their brakes?) Letting the guy two benches down feel your brake every time you fire is not very nice. |

I want a muzzle device on all my hunting rifles, simply to protect the muzzle. My Thunder Beast Ultra 7 is an extremely lightweight hunting can, so I use their flash hiders, or at least I try to. Here I have a 6.5x55 Swede, a 308, and a 30-06 that still needs a rear sight. I'll also have one on my Marlin 336 if it ever comes back from the gunsmith.  " />
