I've got 15 acres with a bunch of creeping zinnia on it. Look kinda like sunflowers. I kept it pretty well mowed at the start of the year but kinda let it go after we got so much rain. Dove season opens around Sept 14th, so I definitely want to mow it before that. But do I gain anything by putting it off until a few days prior? Are the dove eating the seeds from the flowers or anything like that? Or should I mow 2 or 3 weeks ahead of time to let things settle down again before opening day? Of course, 6 weeks to go and I see TONS of dove flying now. |

If the birds show up, give them a few days to a week (depending on the size of the field) and then mow another section. Some. I've left a few trees here and there for cover/habitat. That sounds like a reasonable plan. I will probably mow what I can now, going around the flowers, then mow again maybe 3 or 4 days before opening day and mow over some of the flowers (but not all) |

I wish we had some naturally growing dove attractant. Around here they mow the sunflowers about every two weeks a few rows at a time. They’ll leave a few rows for cover and later shoots. But mow a few now. Doves will leave in a heartbeat for easier food. Mowed some yesterday. |

Sunflowers kind of dying off in sections anyways. Doing some clearing and just a bit of mowing. Only redeeming quality of huisache is it cuts pretty easily. Attached File |
