My daughter and family want to do a garden in East Texas this year. They are of the generation that goes to YouTube for videos on how to do just about everything. She said they are looking for the overall wearing Justin Wilson type for advice.  Hmmm.  I told them to buy a Farmer's Almanac and start there, but they still want videos. The biggest problem is going to be keeping the deer out of whatever they plant. |

Used to watch this guys, I guess, other channel when he used to grow food on his residential lot. https://www.youtube.com/@offgridcurtisstone/videos He used his backyard for awhile, then started on his front yard. I don't have a go-to. Who I Like: David the Good. The Permaculture Consultant to understand soil and microbiome management/compost. Roots & Refuge for encouragement. Millennial Gardener for encouragement and techniques. His climate is a LOT different than mine. Maybe no so different from yours though. Celebrating Appalachia for down-to-earth common sense stuff, but garden is only part of their channel. Very different climate from yours. Homestead Heart Sweetest people on the planet. (though I think they are dems and I kinda have to look over their disappointment with the current admin's choices now and then. They are subtle about it but it is there sometimes. Not much.) Very good garden teachers. Homesteading with the Zimmermans but once again...not all gardening. Some of this is "what to do with the garden produce you will get" which is also important. Hoss Tools has a garden channel/podcast that is really excellent! Although they are still saying to use silage tarps as weed control and we know better now. They don't know better but they will catch up. They are deep south and they make great tutorials about specific veggies. Grace Walk Farm for herbs (there are a bunch for these but I dunno if that's a focus for you.) MIgardener is EXTREMELY popular and a good teacher and a good place to buy seeds from what I hear. I don't enjoy him personally and he's said some dumb stuff that annoyed me to the point that I don't watch but mostly I think he's pretty good. Anne of All Trades--She's said some wrong stuff before. Mostly I like her a lot but some things I just can't get past and it's been often enough that I just don't go there anymore. Who I do NOT recommend: Justin Rhodes --He tells people to do stuff he knows isn't good but if it's popular he does it anyway to get views. He is the influencer who will do just about anything to get views. He's an extremely good videographer and story teller. I just really do not trust Justin at all and I know more about gardening than he does so there's no point in me cussing at the screen. How To With Doc--No. Just...no. Two thirds of what he teaches is dead wrong. He just doesn't know it and neither do his rabid followers. **Texas will be a learning curve all its own. In particular some parts. Learn irrigation.  **Make a plan to manage frustration. There will be frustration. **A lot of times for whatever I'm doing I just search for THAT, and see what a bunch of different people are saying. Nobody knows everything. I will be very interested to see how y'all do! I"m back in veggies after a long time away, and building the raised bed garden is kicking my behind.  |

I'm a YouTuber in the Ozarks I'm about to watch videos on how to help our own garden we can have a rock garden it's been tough and we had to do raised beds only my wife was a master gardener in Wisconsin and here is next level bad  Hugelkultur Garden update: What's flourishing and what's struggling puting in T post is horrible here and I can't believe I complained about it in Wisconsin  Do you have these Tools to help with rocky ground T-Post fencing pains on the modern Homestead? If anyone knows a good one on gardening in the mountains let me know! |

The flowers are for your soul. ETA: I feel your wife's pain. Gardening is so very specific to where we *are* growing things. It's really hard to move. You have to learn all over because the stuff that worked there does not work here. She could do a channel just on that, honestly. How to cope and adapt. Her basic plant growth and development knowledge really helps and so many folks don't have that. |
