I will be going a elk hunt in Colorado 3rd in Meeker. With my son . It will be a guided hunt. |

Major difference is the miles you cover to find an elk. Thats why you will hear over and over good, broken in boots are key. Where we hunt 10 miles in a day is not unusual. Elk are not quiet animals so you won’t be sneaking around like you do for deer. Good boots, good glass and good shape are what gets elk. Enjoy the process! |

Are you doing guided or DYI? I hunt north of there and we regularly see bulls in the 340-360 class. If you are doing it DYI, are you planning g on coming out an scouting in the fall? Are you looking at hunting from small camping tents or setting f up larger “outfitter” style tents. I can tell you from experience that larger outfitter tents with cots and some comfort make a heck of a difference. Hopefully you already have the appropriate rifle and it’s all dialed in. |

I hunt north of Meeker as well. Good boots tut are well broken in. Good glass as other have said. If you haven’t already, put in the mikes asap and do them on every hill you can find. Hopefully you picked a sufficient cartridge and a well constructed bullet and practiced. I find I burn way more calories k hunting so my pockets and day pack tend to be filled with snacks. Cliff Bars, jerkey (usually last years Elk or deer) M&M’s for a quick sugar boost, and oddly some of the MRE side dishes make a great snack and very high calorie. I also pack along peanut butter packets. Squirt them right into your mouth while walking or smear them on a Cliff bar while you are glassing a large area. |

I’ve been self guided out here for 39 years. Last year I was ready to blow off my archery elk hunt, wife isn’t well. Well, I’m not well either being her caregiver. Had to get out, bought a guided hunt not far from home. I had no idea what to expect. I was greatly surprised. Camp and food were good. Guides were excellent. They got me into elk most days, and most of the encounters were not far from the road. Just have a good time. |
