.375 thick.

Hello. I'm looking for sources for some plates for long distance shooting. So far I've found $445 plus shipping from the mcmaster shopping utopia, and I've got a request for quote out now feom a local source, but does anyone have a good source for this type of plate materials?

Thanks.

I do, but I think even if you find it much cheaper online, the shipping is going to kill ya.

Myself and several gun ranges by our plates from a local company called https://www.shapirosupply.com/

He stocks or can get about anything you want, steel wise.

Find a local metal distributer and order it.  That's what I did.  Mine is 30x30x3/8.  FYI, it weighs almost exactly 100 pounds.

I've used it a lot for heavy equipment wear skins.
Most of it was from a company Manganal steel.

Check with your local equipment repair places.

If you're near Birmingham, there's Metal Supermarket store.  They aren't the cheapest, but they'll get you anything and cut it.  You don't have to buy a whole sheet.

I’m tight I go to the scrap yard and get boiler plates. Mild steel can be used at distances and the divots welded up. Disk blades are good too if you can find the 1/4” ones.

How far away are you shooting and with what cartridges?

Most guys shooting out that far use mild steel in 1/4" and don't worry about psi thru, but thats at 2000 plus yards.... Mild steel will work if you go thick enough...if you don't want pass thru...I use 8" to 12" circles of 1/2" AR-500, but only because it was a bargain...

Amazon, 24x24 x3/8 =276.00 with free delivery...

Thanks for the good links.

I'll be using 308 out to 400, 500, 600 yards. Maybe further if I can manage.

I don't know why anyone would presume to tell me what I should shoot at when I'm trying to enjoy my myriad of firearms on my free time.

I have a pile of 3" 4" 6" 8" 10" plates, the "barn door" is a supplement to those.

Great link. These may work.

Does anyone know how thin I can go with 308 at 400 yards? 500 yards?

I just ordered 2-24" diameter boron15B26 disk blades for $156 shipped from a farm supply. Maybe they'll suffice for a while. We'll see.

I think I'm gonna pick up one of those silhouette targets if someone can tell me how thin I can go for 308 at maybe 5-600 yards.

Likely doesn't need 3/8" at those distances either, I doubt 308 can penetrate 1/4" AR-500 at that distance...

Thanks a bunch for the 24" 1/4" thick harrow blade suggestion.  I got two delivered for about $150 and the 556 doesn't even touch it. Haven't shot it with 308 yet, but at 450yards, I think it may be fine. That is a very in inexpensive solution to my original question.

I painted the disk white, and I don't even need a spotting scope to see me hits, and it rings very pronounced that I can even hear it at 450 yards. I'm going to set one at 500, and then further as I get my rifles squared away one at a time.

As I get my rifles right, I'll paint rings inside the disks to get better targets out of them. I couldn't have done better with AR500 because of the loud ring that these make.

Well those worked out so well I bought 2 more of the 1/4" thick 22" diameter blades for $107 shipped. Those are a bit cheaper and only 2" smaller.

If you check the local farmers they’d probably give you some. Or tell the local scrap yard to hold onto them you can probably get them a lot cheaper. Check your local coop and see if they have any that they can’t move.
