It was asked yesterday about the iPhone apps, and I figured I'd ask the question for those with Android based phones. Strelok was the best. It was the easiest to use, easiest to navigate, to input data, pretty much everything. Unless you were a shooter that used a Kestrel or other wind meter, Strelok was perfect. I don't shoot past 500 yards, and I only rarely do that anymore, mostly 400 is super max for me, and 300 and in I don't need an app, but I do like to have one. I just like putting my info in it and seeing what the differences in ammo does, and I put my pistol info in there as well, because I will occasionally take a few shots out to 100-150 yards with them. Not like I'll hit much past 100 yards, but it's fun. Anyway, what are some good apps. I've been using Chairgun Elite, but honestly it sucks. It's too aggravating to input data, and to change views, target types etc. It also has limited reticle choices. It's easy to change target distance once your other info is in there, but that's it. So, short question, ballistic apps for Android, what do you suggest ? Paid and unpaid. Thanks |

I use Applied Ballistics. Feed it good data and it will provide good solutions. I think that's true of any of the mainstream apps these days. I've also used JBM ballistics online. I used it when I was shooting NRL22 and the solutions were surprisingly good for stubby little subsonic projos. One day I'll run a comparison of JBM and AB. |

I think all the ballistics apps give good solutions pretty much these days, so long as you give it the correct parameters to work with. I used to , years ago, use Sean Kindy's Shooter app. I liked it. I don't remember why I switched. Maybe it wasn't available on the Android or something. Most of my shooting is basic, 5.56 NATO stuff, so that's 100 yards chest, 200 yards chest, 300 yards center of face, 400 yards, one head high ( imagine an extra head on top, and aim at the top of it). Anything beyond that, it gets really tough with a red dot / actually a Meprolight M22 Triangle. Most apps don't have that one. I can use a regular red dot reticle though. That works, give or take a few inches, for about everything in 5.56x45 / .223. I use a Burris MTAC with the AR reticle as well on a different rifle, so it's got the stadia lines that are fairly close to being right, but the data they used to space the stadia lines is based on a 20" barrel. It's not far off out to 300 yards, but beyond that, it starts getting stupid. I can still get hits with it from 400-600 yards, but it's not perfect. I really like the scope though. The glass on those were from the XTR II line, same glass and coatings, so it's fighting above it's weight class, and the main thing I really like is the adjustment for brightness. You have an off position between every number, so when you turn it off, all you have to do to get to your usual setting is move it one click either way. You don't have to start zero and roll through all the numbers. It's just one click. |

This thread prompted me to look at Hornady 4DOF, I'll probably install it to play around. I also have an old Garmin foretrex 701 with AB. I got it so I'd have a way to calculate firing solutions without a phone. I don't really use it very often because AB on the phone works so well. I might try it on the January PRS match. Gotta say I'm a little disappointed at AB's support for the thing. They basically ignore it. There is a profile transfer utility that's basically abandoned, and I don't think they provide CDM updates for it any more. |

For tomorrow's match, I have printed my AB tables and JBM tables, taking a stab at what I think the conditions will be. They differ by about 1 MOA at 1000 yards. Since the range is in marginal cell coverage, and we use the phones to score, there's a good chance my phone will die before the final stage so I want hard copy backup. I also created a profile for my Garmin 701. If there's time at the match I'll record the live AB Quantum results vs the Garmin. They are supposed to use the same algorithm, so they should be identical, but the Garmin doesn't have the custom drag model for my bullet so I'm just running it with G7 BC. That seems like plenty of complexity so I'm not going to introduce 4DOF into the fun. |
