I went to a range that goes from 300 yards to a mile.

Took my 223 bartlien barreled ,origin action.

You have to qualify to shoot on the range 3-700 yard targets 7 shots.

You get no help from the spotter ie wind call its all on you.

The targets are hung from one center strap.

So my crap wind call killed me.

The targets at 3,4,5 rotated to fast for me to get a correction.

That didn’t work out well at 6

Gotta tell you missing by an inch at 6 was ruff.

You shoot of the top of  doublestacked  shiping container.

The wind up there is much different than the wind on the range.

.223 in wind is challenging! Took my 14.5 AR when I was ROing at the long range the other night. Anywhere from 7-9 MILS of wind depending on the gusts at 725 shooting 55 grain.

Are/were you able to use ballistic solvers and wind meters?

How big were the targets?

You shouldn’t have too much trouble prone calling misses with a .223 unless it’s really wet and/or your position isn’t dialed in.

What’s the criteria for pass/fail? Did you pass?

Regardless… keep at it man! It’s fun as hell and the only way to learn wind is to shoot in it. Everything from the sound of it, to watching mirage, what the grass is doing, etc are all really good indicators. I was up hunting bears last night… there is just a little cotton in the air from the cottonwoods, was able to adjust my parallax to pick up that cotton at varying distances all the way across the canyon I was set up over to realize I was getting a consistent 90 degree right to left wind all the way to the potential target zone even though it was coming from behind me at the gun… saw a beautiful, golden color phase at 910-850, but he never gave me an opportunity to shoot before he dipped into the trees not to be seen again.

So wait, the only way to have access to shoot and practice wind calls on the 300+ range is to qualify as being already able to shoot and call wind at 300-700?

Balistic solver required  im sure you can use a kestrel this dummy doesn’t own one..

My elevation was / is perfect just the wind.

3-700  yards must hit 66% ipsc 7 shots to do it in ,4 minute time limit

I failed….. you are only allowed to confirm zero at 100 no wind call help from the spotter / anyone

You shoot off double wtacked shipping containers.

I called the wind at 14 it felt like 25 at times it was probably 10  judging my misses but it was gusty

Even with my bad call i still hit at 3 and 4 but the way the targets are hung they rotate if you are off center so I couldn’t tell how bad my wind call was untill my first miss at 500 corrected hit at 5

6 i missed again didn’t correct enough so naturally i over corrected and watched it miss an inch downwind.

Yea i know…. Houses start about 4k behind the range and i think they are in a constant legal battle.

I would be making the 3hr round trip again today but the wind is worse to read today going from 10 steady to dead calm to 15 switching directions 45*

No  way i could  read that perfect at  6-7.

What sucks is i was so damn close wasnt like i was missing by 3’ in  every direction.

My come ups are spot on.

San antonio a few weeks ago i went 5 for 5 on a 3” plate at 400 in the wind.
The difference i shot an 8” pate first and was able to get a solid wind call / adjustment.

I need to take a wind reading class idk if a kestrel would have even solved my problem yesterday since the wind wasn’t the same  from the shooting position vs down range.

Eta  if im running the math correct my wind call has to be within 1.5 mph or im missing at 6-7

The wind was tricky around here yesterday. I shot a PRS match in Decatur and it was definitely challenging. If you think long range shooting is something you’ll do more than dabble your toes in, a Kestrel is invaluable.

Damn, sounds like they really don’t want any other kids shooting in their sandbox. You’ve got to try pretty hard to send one 4k. That’s a challenging course of fire with .223 in strong gusty winds, kestrel or not. I’d make sure the forecast was in my favor before I spent the time to drive that far… maybe a 6.5 creed barrel and standard bolt face is in your Origins future. 😉

All it would take is one bullet in somebody’s house.

Don’t feel bad OP, I showed up at our LR facility thinking I could actually hit steel beyond 600.  With a 1x5 scope lol. 12” plates.
We do have a 4’ one at 1k I managed to whack once.

You will get there. I love shooting 600 with my 223. It humbles and rewards at the same time.

Would a kestrel really get me within 1.5mph downrange say to 1k?

Or would i be better off taking a wind reading class / where i shoot in the wind ??

I know both?

Only if you have one mounted down there. lol Wind meters will only give you the wind speed and direction at your location. You will need to look down range and see what the wind is doing and look at wind, tress etc to give you an idea of what it’s doing. Also keep an eye out for any land or other formations that can channel wind or block it. Wind reading is a tough skill to learn.

The kestrel can be used many ways while you are learning. As long as you have accurate velocity a kestrel can confirm or correct your wind call. If you make a call and the actual result vary the kestrel can help you figure out where you went wrong. If you call isn’t right you can start looking for environmental indicators you may have missed.

A great example was our last elr comp. The wind was gusty 8-15 mph at the line. But when you look through your spotter or scope the mirage was barely dancing. Complete disconnect from the line call. I was lucky and caught it. The line call for our targets was .7-1.5 mil. My call was .2 holding left edge for left to right gusts. My shots stacked up on the left edge. The .2 call was the good call for 1,000-1,200. For the 1,900-2,400 I was seeing even more off a switching wind almost at 12 o’clock. Line wind was the same as earlier. I backed my wind off to 0 and was right on. Everyone who went off the line call had to adjust significantly.

So, your call is 3 moa at 600. Your shot impacts 1moa off a 2 moa plate. Your call is off 2 moa. Adjust your kestrel and it will tell you what the actual wind affecting you bullet flight is. Now you start looking for the clues.

Wash rinse repeat. That’s one way to use the kestrel to learn and improve your wind calls.

Ammo quality is critical at distance. 77 grain SMK's are probably the minimum ammo needed.

Yea i wish i could put it off on something besides me but its 100% me in this case.

I’ve shot my 77 smk’s and 75 eldm’s out to 925.
They flat work to that distance.

The difference was if i was off on a wind call by half a mill u just correct and go on.

I think the guy sitting behind me going to say you can shoot or not got in my head more than i thought it did.

I remembered what i did at 600 I dialed my correction then held it too.

Yea if i would have just taken the time to change my wind call in my app on my first miss to match my impact.

I would have probably had a chance instead  i was doing it in my head and then double dipped it.

Definitely a learning experience even though 4 minutes  for 7 shots is all the time in the world i feel rushed anytime someone pulls out a timer.

Wind changes pretty quickly. By the time you go back and mess around with an app and figure the different wind call and come back and take a shot it will most likely be different again. Very rarely will wind be constant direction and strength.

Best thing to do is if you see the impact make an adjustment with the reticle and hold the correction and take another shot.

If you don’t see the impact then do something different the next shot as what you did the time before obviously don’t work. Make an educated guess with the conditions you are being shown through the scope.

What are the qualification standards?
The range I go to you have to hit 5 consecutive shots on a 6" steel plate at 300 to qualify to shoot on the 600yd range. Another 5 consecutive hits at 600 yds on a 8" (or is it 10", can't remember) to qualify for the 1k yd targets.
Hard as hell at first but surprisingly easy once you have things dialed in.
Cooler days with no wind really helps.

Hit one time 300,400,500,600,700  yards must hit a 66% ipsc 7 shots to do it in ,4 minute time limit.

You are allowed no "help" / wind call.  Spotter only calls impact.

I had a similar experience.  My range requires both mid-range (600) and long range (1200) Qualification.  I took the mid range class, it was great, then I qualified at 600 easily.  The only problem was the part of the class on wind was very abbreviated IMHO and insufficient to the task.  Then I took the long range class, which turned out to just be a quick re-hash of "Remember what you learned in mid-range" and no real new material, then "lets go see what you know."  The 1200 range starts at 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100, and finally 1200.  My experience is here and I still don't know what was wrong, but the bottom line was I was an utter failure, so effectively wasted all of the time and $$ I threw at this.  https://www.ar15.com/forums/precision-rifles/Really-strange-long-range-issue/7-13844/

Get to know what direction the wind is coming from by looking at the leaves, grass, or a wind flag.  Then try to determine how much wind by waching the effect on  those indicators.  Mirage is another good indicator.

If I can get a rough feel of how much wind is out there, I hold off with the reticle to the left or right edge of the target.

A 66% IPSC target is roughly 12" wide.  At 700 yards, every 1 MPH of full value wind will push a 75ELD@2750 FPS about 4 inches or 0.1 MIL.  With the 12" target, that should give you about 3 MPH of variance in what you think the wind is.

It sounds like their qualification is part of their business model to drive people to take their classes, which are pretty expensive IMO. It's a business, I get it. Also I don't think that test is easy, especially when you have to do it in 4 minutes and nail the wind call. How many rounds do you get to shoot?

We had a clinic two weeks ago at a local club and it was $110. That included ammo and match grade rifles and an introductory match the next day (Sun). That was about 125 rounds total.

They may also want to limit access due to range constraints. Looks like a nice range, but I don't think I would want to shoot there.

.1 mil at 700 yards is about 2.5” so it’s a little more but keeping linear out is best. Just run data in mils or moa and measure target that way with reticle also so you can make a fast correction if needed or know where you want to start.

Yea... I don't want anyone to mistake what i'm saying.   I get it in todays world of litigation.  I have no doubt it's a constant legal effort to have a range like this.

I don't know if you remember but years ago we were at a class together at tiger valley.

My brother Halffast was the guy that hit the two larue targets out of the helicopter in 3 shots using a FAL.   (people who haven't shot out of that can't imagine how much it shakes)

I had the Henderson defense ak and made hit's with irons on that ipsc steel out to 600 iirc.....    wasn't any wind that day

Can't remember if it was you or someone else who's dad came to that class...... I think virtually everyone was a member of arfcom.

Of course I remember!  That was a fun day.  I loved taking training courses out there.  I didn't bring my dad tho.

Mil your target. Estimate the wind high/low. Know your wind adjustments. Dial your minimum adjustment and hold windward side of target. Highest probability of a hit. If you are off on leeward side your wind call needs adjustment but your second shot should be on.

Wish it were that easy in the real world.

I shot that day and NETT said crosswind was running up to 15mph that morning.  Tough day to be shooting an 223 without a Kestrel.

That qual is no joke.  Wind was down to 1-2 mph when I made my run and hit 5-for-5 with a 6.5CM but just barely made the time.  Next time I'll have the holds pre-calculated and hope the winds don't shift much.

I was a bit surprised they don't just limit 223 to certain distances... but I think the lawyers established the qualification requirements.

You are correct. If it’s blowing 15 with any variability it’s a learning day with 223.

Keep at it, you will get there!

So i had to go look because this didn't sound right from my memory that is exactly the velocity my 75 eld's are running.

700 yard

hornady 4 dof the App i used .......
1 mph  .29 mil
14mph 2.56 mil wind call what i made...

AB calls for   .16 mil for 1 mph
ab 2.21 mils at a 14mph wind call what i made...

I never used the ab app before i just downloaded it the other day and put in my eldm.

I have no idea what i did to mess up the hornday app on windage  they are around a .1 mill different in elevation.

It's weird how they are off over a .1 at 1 mph but only off .35 at 14mph.  Not sure what's going on there.

Lol i left my house at 6 am so i could be there early and have time to shoot all i wanted.....  no good deed go's unpunished i wish i would have been running late but i always head out first thing in the am.

I do appreciate all the tips etc.
I made more than one mistake but hell that's how you learn sometimes.
The fact that i've found another place that exist within realistic driving distance is awesome too.

Finding a place to shoot distance that was close enough to do it regularly has always been an issue for me so in turn learning to read wind something i just never got good at.

Direction of the wind matters also and will effect not just the wind age but the elevation.

Make sure your azimuth is in properly. If there is more than a couple degrees of angle make sure that is in. Finally make sure the wind angle is set. That is all on top of environmental data.

I have a range sheet that has all the blanks so I know I aid checking each one. The further out you go the more important good data is.

I used to have to drive a long ways for 400 yards.  Now there are long distance ranges in all directions.  With the advances in technology and  affordability plus the availability of ranges it's a great time to get into long range shooting.

AB app seemed to actually work for me the other weekend.  In Feb AB Quantum was a total nightmare.  I have long used Hornady and watched another guy qual with Hornady at NETT.  Inside transonic I don't think AB has any advantages.

What you want to do is actually "True" whatever app you are using to what you are seeing down range.  Once your ballistic app matches the reality (at supersonic) you can better predict moving to targets further out.

You are allowed no "help" / wind call.  Spotter only calls impact.

that's ridiculous.  How are you to practice?  how can you play with your holdover and drift?
One of my ranges actually has people helping each other out at the farther distances, not discouraging people from trying.

Not really. They are testing your abilities. You don’t need to have shot that far to know how to come up with elevation and windage data. They give you some extra rounds and plenty of time. It’s not easy but also not impossible.

My local range has something similar for the 1000 yard qual. It’s about safety and not having people send rounds where they shouldn’t be.

From FM 23-10 Army Sniper Training: Sniper Sustainment Training

(1) After the range cards have been completed, the snipers will be
required to fire the course by having one member call the wind and adjust
the other member’s fire. The ability to call the wind is important as
successful engagement of the targets. After one member fires the course,
they switch positions and repeat the fire course.
(2) When firing the course, snipers should engage the targets in a
sequence that starts with the 200-meter target, then engage each target
out to 800 meters, then engage targets back to the 200-meter target.
(Targets are engaged twice. Snipers will engage a target with no more
than two rounds per target.) The course consists of engaging 20 targets
with 30 rounds of ammunition within a 30-minute time limit. The sniper
should be scored as follows:
10 points for first-round hits.
5 points for second-round hits.
200 points maximum.
140 points needed to pass (70 percent).

Those are against fullsize targets.  You get help, more time, more opportunities per target, and can even have misses.  NETT's standards are tougher.

@splyntered_glory

I have to circle back around to this.

First i cant think splyntered_glory enough for meeting up with me out at ETTS today so i could get some solid practice in.

Confirmed my data is good on elevation etc.   I just fubard my wind call at the other place.

The fact ETTS is open 7 days a week really fit's my schedule better so i got on the list to do my qual next Tuesday.

My only issue is i might actually have a reason for another Caliber now.

I got a little redemption yesterday..... you know the old saying about the sun shining on a dogs butt some days well yesterday was my day.

Yesterday was my qualification day at the new range My brother went to witness if it was a debacle or not and shoot once i was qualified.

The wind gods were with me it was near perfect when i shot. With a little help from 4dof I was able to get first round impact from 360 to 1275.
Roughly 100 yard increments~ it jumps from 1060 to 1275~

I'm not sure who was more surprised when he called impact at 1275 him or me.  He said he'd never seen anyone hit at 1275 with a 223. (it's not like it's a tiny target)
I wish i had a chrono down there to see what it was i think my app says it would be 999 fps at that distance.

He had me shoot at 460 after that to make sure i knew to dial back i assume and left us to bang steel.

I don't know what model spotting scope he was using it was in a Leupold case but it must be incredible because i couldn't tell anything past 860~
He told me where i hit on the target 4" from the bottom 5" from the right edge on the 1275

splyntered_glory  can't thank you enough for turning me onto this place........ I owe you lunch dinner something man.

I don't know what i need yet but i know we need a better spotting scope even before a different caliber.
At 960~ i couldn't reliably hear impacts even with my brothers 308 and they were barely visible in the spotting scope.

I'm horrible about remembering to take picture but here is a few.

Very cool! Congratulations! A hit with 223 at 1,200 is no small feet. Like I say when shooting elr I do my part and then god needs to breath on the bullet.

That's what I was curious about, have never been to a range where I had to shoot a qualifier before being allowed to use it, very different.
