I just signed up for my first ELR competition. I’ve got a lot to learn and a short time to learn it! There are 8 target and each will be engaged 5 times. Shooting the light gun class so 338 or under. I’ll be shooting 245 Berger LRHT’s at 2,910 out of my 300 Norma. Distances: 1081y 1241y 1363y 1573y 1757y 1966y 2225y 2464y This should be fun! |

Come up is 31.4 mil. at 2,464 and IIRC I have 40 mil available. We will see if history carries forward but at 1,579 my dope was .5 mil high. I also have a 40 moa rail that puts my 100 zero right at the bottom of my travel. My smith thinks I’ll get @ 1,000 on my barrel. I am planning on 800. I am at 440 now. |

Farthest I've shot is 2000M / 2200 yards with a 338 Lapua, and even then it was a challenge with 300-grainers in a 1-10 twist against 5'10" E-types. Good luck! |

Comp is this weekend. Got my dope trued out to 2,368 last weekend. Went 2/6 on the 2,368 target with a 14-16mph full-3/4 value wind. Before I shot the target light went off due to the wind. “”I think I’ll add some wind!” Gave it 3 tenths but only needed 2. I just keep telling myself this one is for learning so relax and just shoot. 2,368 target. Misses were all writhing 6” of plate.

Well, that didn’t go as planned! The shoot was an awesome event with great people. My shooting buddy shot excellent and scored a 7th place finish. As for me, drum roll please, I shot a perfect score! A 0! Dyslexia sucks is all I can say. My trued speed is 2,865. I input my trued speed as 2,658. Doh! I lined up on the first target at 997 and fired fully expecting a solid hit. No call! WTF? And so it went through the first engagement. After the first round I went through all my data and found my mistake. Lesson 1 logged. On the second engagement I made the stupid mistake of adjusting the wrong way on my first target. I discovered my error mid second target and by then it was too late. Lesson 2 logged. Regardless of my f ups I had a lot of fun and will come back with a vengeance on the next competition in May. Maybe I’ll get the best improved award! From 0 to a hit! lol! If I input my data correctly! I will say it felt great to make good wind calls for my buddy. He made hits out to 2,401, his personal best. That made the whole trip worth while! |
Glad you had a good time and don’t sweat your score. You did something the vast majority of shooters never do and that’s go out and compete at a match. My first PRS match I showed up with a basic rifle and ammo and nothing else, including any idea what I was doing. . I think I got 9 impacts and the winner had 60 or so. But the group of shooters helped me out immensely and loaned me gear and I’ve been hooked ever since. The first match is a giant learning experience and now you know what to practice and will be far more prepared for next time.

I’m doing 2750 fps with same combo in a 27” AI barrel. Much discussion at hide over why some people get pressure early and others don’t. I’m kinda in both camps. One 300nm with 9 twist and Norma brass and Russian primers is way faster than my AXSR using 215m and lapua brass. Case volume between lapua and norma brass is apparently significant. |

I don't load for either, but the higher velocity can be do to certain powders will make more velocity before seeing pressure as will loading really long since it gains you case capacity with out building more pressure..Shooters have been seeing the same with 300rum using RL33 versus retumbo, the reloader powder will build more speed...In my case 3220fps for a 230 Berger over a stock rifle only showing 3050-3150fps when loaded to blind mag lengths(3.715") versus loading hand feed long(4.000") or SAAMI length(3.600") |

Fortunately this is the fourth Norma my smith has turned out that I know about. I know he has made a bunch and after the last comp is probably going to build one for himself. All of the rifles he has done load work all end up at or slightly above mine. I haven’t had any clickers and my brass isn’t growing in unusual ways. I actually haven’t needed to trim it in 3 loadings. Always work your loads up for your gun! |

Cool thread. I'm learning the ropes of ELR, started with a friend's 338 Improved, and have made hits at 1760 and 2500. I recently picked up a 26" 300NM from another friend. So far I have made hits at 1000 with it using the 230 Berger. My last trip out I wanted to shoot to 1760 but the weather was windy and the mirage was terrible. Hoping to rectify that soon. |

It shot really well in my rifle. The 245 is just a little better on accuracy and beats it in the wind. The 245 is a fantastic bullet. Elr is a blast. Learning to proof your dope and get on target in 5 rounds is a great puzzle. I love it. |

Round 3 was another great learning round. This time I went 13/15 on the first engagement. On the second I scored 2 hits at 2,000. The 2,200 target was elusive but I was very close. Switchy winds were an issue. The last target I dialed 2 mil too much. Math is hard! Overall a big improvement for me. Next comp will be even better. |
