I'm new to PRS and I've researched A LOT to know that it can be a deep, expensive hole. I caught the bug a bit after shooting a class with Jim Smith of Spartan Tactical and really enjoying it. I decided on a Bergara B14 HMR in 6.5CM. I do not reload, but it's not out of the question that I start. For now, shooting factory ammo is my only option. I also built a gas gun in .308 not necessarily indented for PRS, but maybe I'll work that one up too for fun. Yes, I'm asking advice after the purchase. Maybe I'm looking for reassurance; will I regret the 6.5CM? Would 6.5PRC have been a better route? Does the price difference in factory ammo justify something else? Thanks for your thoughts. |

No there is no regret with the 6.5 Creedmoor. It's a good round to get into matches with. I have used one since 2008. The 6.5 PRC would not have been a good choice. No need for the cartridge size and more expensive ammo. The only problem is the HMR has a 22" barrel. It's short and you will give up some velocity with factory ammo but also its a lighter contour so balance may be impacted. These are things you will see down the road as you shoot matches more and can address then but for now just get some ammo and shoot it and get some practice and shoot some matches. |

Well, I'm 57, losing my eyesight, have one replaced knee, I've got a fused lower back and I'm not far from needing two hips. Roadracing motorcycles hurts, LOL! Yeah, I'm not winning anything. Just looking to keep moving and have fun. |

| I started shooting PRS with an HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor and it was a great platform to start out with. If you get bit by the bug you’ll probably end up wanting something more tailored to the sport but you’ll have a lot of fun with the Bergara. Where in Texas are you shooting matches? |

Do have torn rotator and bicep tendon and usual body pain from years as a Marine and Firefighter. Still have fun though even though not winning as much as I used to. |

I know this is an old thread. But i’m really interested in going to white oak creek for my first prs match. So just sign up and go is what everything i read says. Do i need to let the match director know before i’m brand new or just when i arrive? I’m not good at memory games is it acceptable for me to run some kind of cheat sheet on an armband? |

White Oak Creek will be a great first match for you. I’ve been shooting it since they opened and they’re very new shooter friendly. Just sign up-they’re going to Impact Scoring this year by the way-and let Doc or Randy know you’re new when you get there. They’ll be sure to squad you with some folks with experience. A 6.5 creed will be fine. A longer barrel would be better, but guys are winning matches with the 6.5creed Skill, a properly setup rifle and practice matter more than just using the latest wizbang cartridge. |

If my 6.5 creed barrel isn’t here ill be the guy in last place with a 223 if it is ill be the guy in last place with a 6.5 creed. Now that hunting is over i gotta drag a ladder to the range and start practicing. |

If factory ammo is your only option, don't cheap out. Buy Berger ammo. Hornady may show decent groups at 100, but their quality control has gone way downhill. IMHO I'm sure I'll get flamed for that, but the chrony don't lie. Mid to high 20 SD's is the norm with the Hornady 140gr ELDM factory stuff. I've seen it over and over with all sorts of rifles. Once you start stepping out to 500 yards plus, you'll start seeing the importance of small ES and SD numbers. |
