The Scout Sniper Association just posted something awesome and vintage snipery on their Instagram page! More information is going to become available this weekend when it's officially unveiled, this is just a sneak peek! Raffle tickets will be available sometime before Christmas and the drawing will be held on March 17th.

Thought I’d ask here, but for the m24 rear sight base, anyone know the size and type of the filler screws for the sight mount holes? Not the screws that mount into  the receiver, but the 2 holes that would be used to mount the tracker sight.

Here's the full photos of these two rifles. As you can see from the photos, even though these are both Winchester 70 sniper rifles, there's numerous differences between the two of them. Both types were used by USMC snipers in Vietnam. Some snipers preferred the stability of the heavy marksman stock, other snipers preferred the lightweight and more maneuverable sporter stock. The SSA is going to reveal which rifle is the next raffle rifle and which rifle is Carlos Hathcock's rifle tomorrow after the Guardian Long Range match.

The rifle was unveiled today, the top rifle is Carlos Hathcock's Vietnam War used M70, the bottom rifle is the SSA's 2022 raffle rifle!

Gentlemen, it's time to grab your tickets for the 2022 Scout Sniper Association rifle raffle! This year's rifle is pretty epic, it's a Vietnam War era Winchester M70 clone that's been built with original USMC take-off parts and a civilian receiver in the USMC M70 serial number range! The SSA is a great organization and all the funds raised from this raffle will be used to support the USMC sniper community (lots of gear and supplies gets send to active duty and deployed units!). Please check out the SSA's website to learn more about the organization and what they do. The drawing for this raffle is going to be held on March 17th (03/17, the USMC Scout Sniper MOS), I wish best of luck to all those who participate! Please let me know if you have any questions about the raffle, rifle or the SSA.

Here's a link to the SSA's website, it has all the raffle rifle information and a some great photos of the gun! You can only purchase tickets through the SSA's website:

Whats the story behind the bottom rifles barrel?

Nice rifle! I bought my 1903A4 from the CMP and it came with the M73B1 on it. Since it's one of the rare A4's that still retains it's original scope, I'm keeping as is. If I were to put another scope on it, I'd use something that's extraordinary rare, like this minty OPL M73B2:

That's a US marked Remington 40X with a USMC MCCDC marked Leatherwood scope (the scope is photographed in one of Senich's books) and a Sionics modified barrel. In the early 1970's the Marine Corps wanted to upgrade their M40's, so they were testing all sorts of rifle/optics/parts. This rifle and scope were part of that testing. Sionics also built a few 6257xxx M40's with the modified barrel and silencer, those were actually used by Army SF in Vietnam (I know someone who has one of these M40's). Obviously my 40X test rifle wasn't selected to become the M40A1, the Corps chose a much better combination for the A1.

Yep, those are the elevation and windage...... things. Can't call them knobs, I guess, lol. It's one of the rarest US military scopes, only a handful are known to still exist and it's missing from most major collections. They were made right after WWII ended by OPL (a French company). They were never used in combat, just testing. Unfortunately mine is missing the weird windage knobs that are on the scope base.

Look at at little window on the right side of the front ring. This allows ambient moonlight or a small flashlight to light up the reticle. Almost like an archaic illuminated reticle. I can't remember if any of the reference books discuss this feature, but I'm the only person who's actually photographed to a posted the info for everyone to see. Here's some good pics:

Army still uses that technique on the 12x boresight scope (BTA).  Kit is issued with the Mk19 and Mk47 40mm Grenade Launchers.  Turn collar, shine light in hole and reticle is illuminated for boresighting at night.

I just purchased this at an auction for a whopping $40 and it's by far the strangest M40 stock I've ever seen! It's a real M40 stock and has all the correct characteristics, but I have no idea who did the modifications. It's actually pretty stable holding it while standing, but the vertical foregrip is too far forward and would have better ergonomics if it were moved back an inch or two.

I opened up the recoil lug inlet bedding just enough to drop in Culver's M40 barreled action:

Here's a closeup of the vertical foregrip:

Closeup of the butt modification:

The butt now has a Pachmayr White Line recoil pad, instead of an aluminum 40x buttplate. The and of the stock was sanded and reshaped, so the original stamps underneath the 40x buttplate are gone:

The holes on the left side of the foregrip and buttstock are sling swivel screw holes. Here's a rear sling swivel off an M40 stock in each of these holes:

There's also something written on the left side of the stock, it says "Mortuus Via Longus." I assume it's in Latin and means something like "death by long [distance]." I guess it's a fitting statement for a sniper rifle:

I have a bunch of original M40 stocks to compare this weird stock to, but only one of them has this same gray bedding. Remington didn't use any bedding material when they built the M40's (their "hand bedding" was just making the stock with tighter dimensions so the receiver fits better) and the 2112 armorers typically used Bisonite as the bedding compound on the M40's during the 1960/70's. I don't know what material this gray bedding is and I don't know why the 2112's didn't use Bisonite like the majority of the bedded M40's.

I've seen a few other original M40 stocks with this same bedding, so it's probably original to the stock when it was in USMC inventory. If this is the case, then the foregrip and stock modifications were also done at the RTE shop, since the stock would have to be rebedded for a new civilian barreled action (if the mods were done outside the Corps). I don't know why someone would go through all the trouble modifying the stock and then not fit it to their barreled action.

My barreled action sort of fits the stock after I slightly opened up the recoil lug inlet, but it's still not a perfect fit in the original bedding. When I received the stock I looked closely at the bedding and it was clean, no one had touched the bedding until I decided to do so. All of this information points to the stock possibly being modified by 2112's.

Modified M40 on the left, regular M40 on the right:

So, that's my new stock and that's all the information I have, hopefully someone here knows something about it! I think this could be an RTE modified M40 stock, there's a few indicators that it's possible and the 2112's were known to have modified a ton of M40 parts after the Vietnam War. They experimented with everything in order to create a better sniper rifle (that's how they ended up with the M40A1), so it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was one of their creations. However, this RTE connection is pretty much impossible to prove without a firsthand account from a 2112 or sniper who made/saw/used this stock. It could also be some drunken creation by a civilian who got their hands on a cheap surplus stock. I have no idea, I just think it's interesting.

What do you guys think about this strange stock?

Those aren't my Mod 0 stocks anymore, many people in this thread own them. I took these pics in 2016 when I was living in Chicago. I needed some way to efficiently ring them from the loading bay to my apartment, so this is how I moved them. Some woman saw me moving them and actually called the police! I tried selling them some stocks when they showed up, but they weren't interested.

Look through this thread and look at the photos, you might see some of these stocks. I'm happy to have had a hand in documenting their history. I hope more people post pics of their builds, it's great to see these stocks being used and enjoyed!

Figured I'd post it here too for those that dont follow the AE thread.

M24 can for my m24a2 build. AEM5 for size reference. Absurdly long is the most awesome way. It's heavy, but the weight balances nicely over the 12.25" length lol.
