I just picked up a new to like new Remington 700 pss .223, 24” barrel, looking for some info on when it was made, was it part of the trigger recall etc.

Barrel code is LK and serial# begins with C. Got the date figured out, looks to be February 1990.

Receiver is only stamped Remington 700, from what little info I found that seems right for this gun.

I’m sure it will be, currently have a 308 5r milspec that’s an absolute tack driver. This has a 1/12 so I’ll load up some 52-55 grain stuff first to see how it shoots. Don’t think it will like the heavier stuff.

Have a base and rings on the way, have a scope to use for now 4-16 Vortex HSTz will load up a couple different loads this week. Hopefully by next weekend I’ll get to shoot it.

1:12 Should do well with 50-55 grainers.  My Rem 700 in 22-250 is 1:14 and does best with 40-45 grainers.  50's are acceptable for critter shooting, but the accuracy does fall off some. 55's make shotgun patterns.  As soon as the barrel is shot out, I'm going to rebarrel it so I can go with heavier bullets.  To do what I'd like will require a deep throat and probably something like a 1:6.5 twist.  It would be nice if it would shoot Barnes LRX's, but's that a crazy long bullet for caliber (1.182 inches).

Cool old rifle.  I have it's younger brother, the LTR in 223.

The trigger is consider the "Walker style" and was part of one of the recalls.  They are a really good trigger as long as you keep it clean and don't let bore solvents, oils, etc get in them and harden.

The first thing I would try are the 52 or 53 grain match bullets, including the 53 ELD and Vmax.

Thanks for the info, trigger felt great and breaks at 1 1/2#, however I changed it and put a timney HIT set at 1#.

Picked up and loaded some 52 grn Hornady BTHP match bullets to try first. As soon as I hit the range I’ll give a report.

Been to the range twice, first trip was to try some 52 grn Hornady match bthp. It shot pretty good, was getting sub moa groups. Picked up some sierra 53 grn smk’s, seems to like these a little more. Only loaded up a couple loads and seemed to shoot pretty good. Both are 4 shot groups, two different loaded using W748. Best group was 25.5 grns at 2.200 OAL.

I’ll do some more load development and try some different powders, looks like it’s going to be a pretty good shooter.

They are great rifles. I swapped the BBL out on mine around 6500 rounds and went with a faster twist so I could shoot the heavier bullets. I picked mine up in 2005, and my PSS factory BBL was 1-9, and it didnt like the 75gr or heavier bullets. It shot the lighter stuff well, esp. the 69SMK.

This one is a 1:12 so I’m stuck with lighter bullets for now, I do eventually want to get a 1:7 or 1:8 but will shoot this as is for a while. I tried 77 SMK after I dialed it in with the 53’s and they weren’t even on the paper at 100.

Have one in 22-250.  Great shooter.  I rebarreled with a 1-9 and like it even more.

Ya, not a fan of the 1-12 as I would prefer to shoot the 69 or 77 grn smk’s. Later down the road I may have it rebarreled.

It should shoot little bug holes out to 200 with flat-base 52-grain benchrest bullets.  You can slaughter a lot of prairie dogs and groundhogs before needing a new barrel.

A 1-7 or 1-8 will give you crazy flexibility and the capability to go to 1,000 yards if you can read wind well enough to stay ahead of switches and changes.

Have you measured the twist rate to verify? All but the very early ones were a 1:9.

The 53gr VMAX is a great bullet option for a 12 twist though. It’s got a good BC for its weight. I’ve shot a lot of them at distance and they are very very consistent to 800.

My M700V .22-250 is a late 80’s vintage iirc.  It’ll shoot the Sierra or Noslers 52 grain BTHP match into little groups easily.  I doubt I ever loaded anything lighter than 50 grain ballistic tips.   Hell even the source of brass load, the factory 55 PHP was sub moa easily.   I bought 5 boxes with the gun.  The gun has never seen factory ammo since.

Yes, verified twist rate with a cleaning rod. Last tip I tried the 53 grn smk’s and it seems to like those. Will try some different powders and see what it likes best.

Those groups you posted earlier look very good for a factory rifle.   Mine likes Benchmark and H322 with the 52 match bullets.

My PSS in .308 with Leupold MKIV 3.5-10x40 shoots half MOA groups with 168gr SMK’s out to 600yds. Haven’t stretched further than that.

That’s even with a chopped/recrowned and threaded barrel to accept a suppressor. Adco did great work for me!

Also replaced the trigger with an adjustable Jewel around 2010. 2LB clean break

I’m pretty impressed for the first time out. I have a 5R milspec 308 that shoots sub moa consistently. I always had good luck with Remington 700’s.

I have two of those, one in 223, one in 308. Love em both. Recently had both threaded for suppressors.

I have one of those too. I have great results with 52-53g match bullets from Sierra or Hornady.

55s shot decent but anything over that starts to spray.

I have a PSS in 308 that I bought around 1998. The thing shot so far to the left that I almost ran out of windage in the scope. After miultiple attempts to remedy the issue, I became disgusted and put it in the safe for decades. About 15 years ago I learned that some of the recoil lugs weren't ground flat, thus the barrels would not be parallel with the receiver.  Still sits in the safe.

@USMC2111

It could also be that the scope mount threads were not drilled in line with the bore.  Burris pos-align rings could remedy the issue if alignment is the issue.
