I'm thinking of taking their pistol classes, (civilian) especially CQB, but I'm a little worried about the fact that Paul Howe isn't teaching the classes himself anymore. The biggest value of in-person classes is the instructor diagnosing and correcting the technique errors, and I'm not sure how well this skill can be transferred to other instructors even if they are great shooters themselves. The theory I can read in a book :) Has anyone had recent experience with taking the post-retirement classes there? |

I was there recently and Coy was the Primary instructor for the class. Paul was there for basically 75% of the class, either helping out with the drill, giving one on one coaching to the side, or a few times running a simultaneous drill elsewhere. I highly recommend CSAT for anything, I'm a satisfied repeat customer. @voyager3 |

I should poke my head in here more often. CSAT is my home training facility and I'm only now seeing this. Repeat CSAT student x7 here, including instructor school; taking another course in a few months. OPs concern is understandable, but IMO unwarranted. Paul is super amicable with his paying students, but I've had some chances to peek behind the curtain and have figured out he's got very high expectations for his employee instructors. New instructors build experience with Paul watching over their shoulder constantly. If Paul wanders off during instruction, I know that that guy has paid his dues and is squared away. Also, if Paul is retired, he sucks at it. This year Paul is back as lead instructor much more often. Last couple years he's been doing other CSAT-related stuff, but one of his newsletters recently indicated he's going to be spending less time off away from classes. Hope this helps. |

Thanks everyone for their insights. I've had a chance to take the Tac Pistol class and it was awesome. The best part was that for every issue I felt I had with my shooting they had a technique or a drill to systematically address it. I think the way to get the most out of the class is to come with a lot of questions and not being shy to ask. Paul is a wealth of actionable knowledge. Look forward to future classes there. |
| Old thread I know. A fellow church member is an instructor there. I have taken the Extreme Red Dot class and the Guardian 1 Class. I have learned a lot. Much improvement in my shooting skills. A lot left to learn though. |

| I've been there eight or nine times. Some time back Paul said he was stepping back and having his people take over more. However his folks said of him that he would never be able to stay away. That's how he is. Very recently though, seems the upkeep of the place is getting to be a bit much, he aint young anymore. If you're thinking of going there, go. Paul may not be the lead person teaching but he will be greatly involved and the other instructors will be doing exactly as Paul would. He is very strict with them. BTW The best deal for the money anywhere is his three day Guardian 1 class. (pay the extra hundred to stay in the barracks). I've been to very many other classes and instructors. Train with Paul. |
