I'm going to be honest, I've never had much interest in this, but I always wanted a lever .357/38 and recently bought one and my dad made a comment about getting into cowboy action shooting. (It's a Heritage 92 with a 16" barrel if anyone absolutely needs to know). I'm a big fan of the S&W Schofield, so I went down the rabbit hole of looking for guns, and discovered that ONE schofield clone costs as much as half my first car. Ha. Anywho, the general questions I wanted to ask: 1. Is .38spl ok? It would be nice to have a common round that I already have laying around. On top of that it's cheaper to shoot overall I believe. I like authenticity, but I like having money too. 2. Are there any events with single pistols or do I have to have two at a minimum? |

Running a ton of 38s thru a 357 can burn a ring into the end of the cylinders that will hinder extraction of 357. How many rounds? I'm sure it is a lot on the order of what it takes to create throat erosion but you might be shooting a lot of rounds if you are doing those competitions, and you are shooting them back to back. Personally I would load my own 357 rounds. Surprised no one has answered you question about needing 2 guns or 1. I can't answer that. I personally would just go with a Ruger but if you are looking for bargain, Taurus does make the Deputy and I don't think I've read about anyone having a problem with one. I know friends don't let friends buy Taurus but a sub $500 shooter is hard to beat. It's not like Taurus can't bake a decent gun when they want to but it's out there. |

Two pistols, rifle holding at least 10 rounds and shotgun that is limited to being loaded with two shells at a time is standard, and will be required at the big championship shoots like Winter Range or End of Trail. There are no requirements for club shoots, but it is typical to do 10 pistol shots, 10 rifle shots and 4-8 shotgun shots. Some clubs may allow reloading a pistol during a stage, some won't. I have heard of clubs setting up a stage, or even a doing a full shoot using just a single pistol. I once shot a club shoot that had one stage that was shotgun only, had 28 targets, all had to be knocked down to finish. Takes a lot of ammo and a lot of time to reload a shotgun that many times. Edit to add: 38 special is probably the most common cartridge used in CAS; so don't worry about selecting that caliber. |
