I am not a new shooter but would like to add some defensive pistol drills to mt practice. My range has a very nice pistol pit that i ussually have 100% to my self. I will be using a basic G19 with RMR in a Gunfighters Inc Kenai. The holster is not my ideal CCW but its what i woods carry on a very regular basis. I carry that holster or in my bino holder very regularly. So thats what i practice drawing from. I am just looking for what would be a few basic pistol drills and deffense fundamentals that i can practic for the first few months before i step up into anything complex. |
| I just got done with a 2 hour pistol training session with a local professional trainer. He had me running transition drills between two targets. I have to admit he was spot on with what I needed to work on. He filmed my shooting, grip, trigger pull etc etc. then played it back for me. I’ve never had anyone do that for me. It definitely helped. |

Look up the following: Paul Howe CSAT Guardian 1 standards (not the stricter instructor level standards) John Farnams DTI 8 yard basic handgun qual Modern Samurai Project test (don't worry about the very strict times) Chuck Pressburgs No Fail pistol standard (25 yards) 45 drill. Five shots in five inches at five yards in five seconds. (Similar to the Bill Drill) Mix and match from those and you can find what you want. |

Some great ideas already. With my students who already have the fundamentals of gun handling down, I run this drill as it is a good assessment of your defensive pistol skills: 3 seconds or Less Level 1 is is the bare minimum skills. Level 2 is respectable. Level 3 is where you are clearly capable and can move on to other things if you wish. If you aren't running a timer, Dot Torture Shooting Target Drill (Printable for Free!) is a nice 50 round practice session. |

Also, don't forget to do some distance work. Set a target at 25 yards/meters and do some reps drawing and firing one round on target. Use a timer and push yourself. Do a magazine or two. Don't go overboard. Rationale for distance training is that If you can consistently make COM hits at 25, hitting targets at 10 yards or less becomes much easier. Bottom line: Don't solely focus on 7 yards and in. |
