OK, need to locate and eventually purchase a tripod for shooting purposes. Needs to be tall enough to support the rifle from the standing position, ( I'm 74 inches) and collapse low enough that sitting or kneeling is possible. It needs to be light, sturdy enough to support a 15.3 lb rifle and cheap enough for a PFC in the Guard to reasonably afford. Ready, GO!

I have used this to good effect. It's not the most high speed tri-pod/cradle, but it is light, stable and relatively inexpensive. |

I would second that tripod and saddle/cradle combo, for that price you are getting a lot. Potential downside is for standing you have no rear support for the rifle other than the shooter.
Another option: Bog Tac Tripod - http://www.boggear.com/tripods/tac_tripod.html with Stoney Point Tag-a-Long - http://www.amazon.com/Stoney-Point-Accessory-Tag-Along-Pivoting/dp/B001O3TF9Y Put those together and you get a setup that looks like: 
(this is a different tripod/shooting stick with the Tag-a-Long) That setup is fairly light, packs down pretty nice, and gives you the rear support for the rifle that a standard tripod and saddle/cradle does not. Here is another option It is kinda expensive, and you will need a tripod (I like Manfrotto), but it is another option. Another saddle I haven't personally used any of the above because the PRS does what I want, but both get pretty good reviews.
