All I have to say is wow. I used one to drop a rabid dog today at about 80 yards. There was a sighting of a rabid coon earlier in the week and wednesday the neighbor up the street came home and one of his labs was a little scratched up and the other was missing. Buttercup, the lab that was left, is still at the vet under observation but they dont think she got more than a couple good claw marks. Duke was missing till this evening. We were sitting on the porch with the neighbor when duke broke through a tree line about 300 yards away. The owner went to call his name but my dad stopped him and got some binoc's. Sadly to say he was full froth and the neighbor said to do what we had to do. He went back in the woods and was gone for about 10 minutes and I went back in the house and got my SAR1 and a 30 rounder full of 154 grain soft points. My dad got his rem700 7mm mag. Duke popped out of the woods again about 100 yards out and ran down the tree line somewhat parrallel to us. My dad leveled off and pulled the trigger and only got a click. He worked the action and only got a click again. I picked up the SAR1 and put the bead about 3 inches over his back. I have it sighted in with wolf fmj at 50 yards so I figured I'd give it a little more lee way. The owner clapped his hands and duke paused for just long enough to crack off one round. He folded up on his butt with out even a whimper. However much I hate shooting a dog it had to be done and I'm really glad it ended so quickly. We put him in a wheel barrow and took him back to the neighbors house and buried him in the backyard. He was a great companion and will be missed. We're pretty sure my dads firing pin is broken though no one remembers when it happened. I was really impressed. Duke was probably 70-80 pounds and was a healthy dog. I had no idea of the knockdown power of the sp's. There is no way he would have gone down like that with .223. |
My guess is he used th wolf 154gr sp. Good load from what i've heard. Guy out by where we deer hunt got to does with them this year. One at 50yards the other around 70-80. They both dropped like rocks and never moved according to what the guy told us. |
| Yes, velocity goes down to 2100 or so with the heavier bullet, so you would have to generate a trajectory and re-sight your rifle if you were going to use it all the time. I would guess you would go about 1/2" to 3/4" higher at 100 yds to maintain the same far zero. This would throw the near zero closer a few yards. This would really only be important if you were using a scope or shooting at ranges greater than 150 yds. I would hope no deer hunter takes a shot over 100 yards with a 7.62x39 rifle with a 16" barrel. I had a Zastava Mini Mark X bolt-action rifle in 7.62x39 with a 20" barrel a few years ago, but let it go. Wish I still had it. |
Not real sure what kind of treatment they got when they were adopted. I figured it was part of the spca policy. I'll drop by the vet on tuesday and make sure buttercup has had hers if not I'll go ahead and get her one. They really were great dogs. Thier owner doesnt really have a lot of money or much of an education. Moving on, I really do like the SP's. I'll probably keep my rifle zero'd for fmj and just take it into consideration. |
