Sorry but I can't search for this one. So here it goes. What are the steps involved in converting 545 to 556? The 5 rounder that came with my SLR106FR is just not enough. Also does anyone have a reveiw of the arsenal 556 clear waffle mag, as sold by KVAR? Thanks for your help.

I have an original 223 norinco and I've been stocking up on the PRO MAGS for the 223 aks. they work great, and there cheap. the 545-556 converted mags are totally useless. only good for 20 rds in a 30 rd mag. anything over 20 the mags are prone to jamming. but to answer your question, a new spring, floorplate, and follower kit is needed to convert 545 to 556. they're like ~10-15 bucks.

To convert the E. German bakelite mags you need Robinson Arms .223 followers and a mod. to the feedlips for other rifles that would work with them.  Don't know how reliable they are in your rifle, some have been able to use the .223 Promags and the K-VAR mags are the ones that are made for the rifle.

The clear mags work fine in my Veper as do the converted 545 mags .My Veper came from the factory with a 545 converted mag and I bought a few additional followers from Robarm and like mentioned above I dremelled the feed lips until they matched the contour of the factory mag and I have function tested the mags with all 30 rds and they worked great !
HTH .....

It's probably not worth the effort, but:

If you have some poly Bulgy 5.45 mags you can grind the bump off of the follower and glue a chunk of AR-15 black follower on top.  I ground down the black AR follower so that the rear was 3/16" higher than the front.

But, the cost savings isn't worth it.  At least now that ORF's deal is over.

You have a nice Bulgy 5.56 rifle, get some Bulgy 5.56 mags for it.

AIM has them for $24

I have all different mags fro my two SAR-3's, I use continuously Russian PLUM and Bakelites, Bulgarian Black and Brown, and East German Bakelites in my rifles. Buy your mags from ORF (Ohio Rapid Fire) AK-74 mags then go to http://www.robarm.com/products.asp?cat=11
and find and buy his VEPR .223 followers, switch the followers in your AK-74 mags with these and load and go. I have had NO MALFUNCTIONS of any kind using these followers and its as simple as that.

5.45 to 5.56 can be very reliable if you put Robarm follower ($7.00) with no other changes.

I have had 2 PRO MAG .223 magazine.  I broke one.  The front locking tab broke.  Unlike 5.45 mags, PRO MAG magazine body is not renforced with metal.

I would go with conversion.  $7.00 + $7.00 = $14.00

What I also done is to epoxy small tabs at the back of the follower to raise the back end of the cartridge just a little bit like Robarm follower.

Thanks for all the great info. I caved and bought a bulgy cl waffle. Works great, but 25 to 30 bucks a pop is kinda steep. I asked the question mainly for the 545 mags I have left over from my Romanian AK.hinking.gif
