NOTE: Just so you know, I am in no way connected to 762Tactical, except as a new customer. I got this rig and thought I would review it for you guys. I did everything with a camera phone, so it does not do justice to Colin’s fine craftsmanship.
I have been trying to set up rigs for specific rifles. I have wasted money and not always been happy with what I have. I like to keep it simple, but just like being able to grab the rig I plan to use that day. I have a MOLLE vest for my Krink with pouches to hold 12 mags. I have a MOLLE vest for my AR that will hold 8 mags. I have a Chicom chest rig for my SKS that holds 200 rounds on stripper clips. My main deal with a rig is to not have to walk back to the car at our range so often. Yeah, I do some “tactical” drills, but the rigs are mostly for saving steps back to the car. So, since my purchase of a Draco I thought it would be best to set up a rig for the new purchase. I initially decided to keep it simple and set my sights on the Chicom Chest rig with 3 magazine pouches and several small pouches on the sides as usually sold by Centerfire. I had planned to dress the Draco in green furniture (future SBR project) so I decided I wanted an OD green chest rig. I remembered Centerfire had these for like $10.00. At the time I was searching I could only find cammo. Seemed the entire market of OD green was gone. Then I stumbled on a thread where someone posted a link to 762Tactical I first looked through the offerings and found the OD green Chicom copy. The first thing I noticed was the rig had no side pouches, but instead MOLLE webbing. I contacted the owner, as there was no way to order from the web site. Colin Baird, owner of 762Tactical promptly replied to my email. Colin said in a month or so he would have prices and a shopping cart, but for now he does his business through ebay and email. Colin said he was offering a 5% discount for NOT ordering through ebay. Here is a quote from Colin, “The OD Green rig on my website is the ChiCom and is designed to hold up to six (6) AK 47/74 30 round magazines. It's made from either 1000D Cordura or Kodra 66 (same as cordura but not made under license) and sewn with size #92 Ml-spec thread for a lifetime of abuse. Sells for $39.99 and hand made by me in Redding Ca.”. This was more than the $10.00 I was prepared to pay, but all sounded good so I decided to give him a try. I ordered the rig on a Saturday morning and received it the next Saturday. Not a very long wait especially since Colin said he built it when I ordered it. Here is what it looks like
Just like the Chicom it has the shoulder straps that criss-cross in the back. Only Colin’s version has wider straps up front for comfort. The straps have adjusters, which make it easy to find the right fit. I know it is a chest rig and most people probably wear them high on the chest, but I prefer mine to be just high enough that I can comfortably sit in a vehicle with the rig on. The side panels are tapered and will go under the arm for those who do wear it high on the chest.
The waist strap has a nice National Molding squeeze buckle and adjuster. There is plenty of room for big fellas or small fellas. Just make sure you consider all your different clothing before cutting off the excess strap. The side panels have MOLLE webbing which in my mind made Colin’s configuration better than the original. Now, I can put whatever I want on the rig. The mag pouches are nice and deep. The Velcro flaps are very nice and are adjustable. Just spread open the area behind the pouch and the flaps are velcroed and can be adjusted or removed all together. The pouches do not have any other retention device such as bungee cord so it all depends on your mission. The pouches easily held two (2) AK-47 mags, each, both steel and polymer. I also tried my 545 mags and found no problem there either. Now, this vest is for the AK-47 or 74, but I tried my AR mags. I found that without a floor plate of some type the AR mags sat too deep in the pouch for any kind of quick retrieval. But, don’t be discouraged because Colin makes several applications that fit the AR mags. The flaps covering the pouches are Velcro and there are pull-tabs. If this is not enough the pull-tabs are looped so you could attach something like para-cord or something to them for a better purchase. The bottom of each pouch has 1 riveted eyelet to allow for drainage. The pouches do not have dividers, but I have found dividers, do cut down on clanging magazines, they seem to get in the way and make pouches too tight, specially with the tabs on the backside of the AK mags. 2 steel mags on the right and 1 polymer Tapco in the center
2 74 mags in the center and believe it or not 2 AR mags on the right. The one without the pull tab is sitting really low inside there
The backside of the rig is not padded, but I did not have a problem with this. I wore this rig around the house for several hours, with 6 loaded magazines, before going to the range and had no issues with comfort. At the range I went prone, dynamic prone, kneeling, sitting and of course standing. I even jogged around a bit. The rig stayed put and did not slide around. It was comfortable and kept my equipment right there with me. This rig is very secure. The shoulder straps were not too wide or bulky to interfere with shouldering the weapon, but were much more comfortable than the narrow straps on the SKS chest rig. The rifle did not slide around on the straps, at all. Of course I bought this for my Draco, but I took my Krink along for the outing. I did not notice any more bulk when slinging my Draco than any other rig. While slinging my Krink I was able to slide the magazine behind the rig and comfortably carry the Krink without the weight being on my shoulders. It was a nice high ride position.
Looking over the material I think Colin did a excellent job of constructing this vest. I found no loose threads or hanging threads. It rides comfortably and does the job it was intended to do. I wanted something simple and functional and I believe I found it. I just wish I had found Colin before buying my other rigs. Take a look at Colin’s web site, but keep in mind he is still building his business. I can’t wait to see the site up and running better. If you don’t see what you want drop Colin an Email. He says he will do custom work so he can probably make you something to your specifications. I have a feeling we better jump on this guy quick before his prices start going up once the secret is out. 5-21-10 Update Ok guys, I got another Chicom and asked Colin to customize it a bit. I think I had done what some of you were asking about. I won't go into the same detail cause the rig is exactly like the one in the review except for the pouches and color. I had Colin cut the pouches down 1.5 inches so the mags would extend beyond the top of the pouch. This time I had Colin make it in Desert Tan. Here are the pics: The Rig
Open. See who well the mags extend beyond the top?
My own touch
This one is so much lighter with six 5.45 cirlce 10 poly mags than the six 7.62 steel mags Thanks Colin for another great rig. I know I will enjoy Don't forget to throw Colin a congrats! His wife just had their second child For those who may have missed it look at 762Tactical 7-4-10 Edit Ok guys, I went to this 12 hour carbine school. It was for the job, so it was an AR school. But, I took the desert Chicom and used it. I was so impressed. The rig was comfortable the whole time. All the straps stayed in place and never got twisted or anything. It rained off and on all day so the rig got soaked. Never gave me one problem. We ran, went prone and shot from every other position. At one point I managed to get three GI AR mags in one pouch. I was in a hurry and will have to go back and try to duplicate that cause I did not plan for it. I ran it with the pouch flaps closed. I also ran it with the pouch flaps pushed to the inside during a few speed drills. The velcro on the flaps actually stuck to the inside of the pouch so when I drew a magazine out the flap stayed in place. I was worried, at first the flaps would come out with the second mag and cause a problem, but that didn't happen. I say this rig is 100% good to go for a range rig and for the real deal! We did everything you would probably ever do and it passed the test. Colin is making a very solid product. I know I will be getting an AR Chicom, now, and getting rid of the GI issued rig. 8-8-10 Update: Have put on Condor Med Pouch and Condor double Pistol Mag Pouch. Colin said he can make these, but I already had these.
Draco Rig is the same:

Thanks for the review BM543, I know arfcommers will get some use out of it. The forum was really helpful when I was shopping for what ended up being my TT MAV (particularly ARCANGEL So it sounds like he builds them all one at a time? I wonder if he could do one that had 4 big pouches? I have a friend that wants to get an M23 Pioneer but the cheapest he's found is around $60. Not bad for what it is but if he could get the same thing at half the price maybe, that would interest him. Looks like a solid product too and I think your review is well done. Kudos! Z |

Hey Guys, thought Id' jump in here.
First, bikeman543 thanks for the great review! Second, if you guys need any info just shoot me an email through the website (just use the link bikeman543 put up). I am currently working on a real website but my computer person (my wife) hasn't had the time up. She scheduled it for early next week to be done (if all goes well). I'll keep you posted. Thanks, Colin 762Tactical |

Tx and Hizzie,
Thanks for the acknowlegement. I've watched you guys and took some wise words from you, in the past. Colin, Thanks for jumping in there. I was starting to feel like an employee, for a minute. Hope I did your product some justice. I really like and plan to enjoy it and future purchases. |

Looks very good.
I was wondering, can you do a version that has the mag pouches a little shorter? Also, are buckles available instead of velcro? I like to be able to get a grip on mags and velcro can get packed with mud and crap when you're rolling around in the dirt. BSW |
|
He says he can cusomize. I'm not sure about the buckles, but I just asked him about making the pouches shorter and he said yes. I've just bout decided to change over to this for my Krink, but the 74 mags did sit kinda low as the pictures in the review show.
Email him and ask bout the buckles. Seems he has gotten pretty busy after the review. |

I have a original ChiCom rig and I'd like a modern day version of it.... This looks like it could do the job. Couple of questions. 1 - Prices 2 - Who can I order it from 3 - Color Option Well, when I bought it it was $39.99. Color options are OD, but I think he will do it in other colors. You would have to contact him. Here is the link to his web-site that has his email and phone number. 762Tactical |

I have bought from Colin at 762 Tactical, he is a great guy to deal with and has no problem making items to your need. The Picture on his web site of the Multicam chest rig with the fastex buckles is the one he made for me. He does great work and is a good guy! I plan on doing more business with him. Thanks again Colin.

C459,
Thanks for responding. I would like to hear from more of Colin's customers; before and after the review. I too plan to get at least one more rig from Colin. I'm thinking of another Chicom, but in Desert Tan with shorter pockets. That would fit my 74 mags better, I think. To all those other that have replied, remember as it has been said call or email Colin and he does do custom work. So, you can change the rigs up. |
|
Had a custom made rig from 7.62 for about a year now. He modified the shoulder straps and fasteners to my specs, and added more MOLLE attachments so I could fit extra pouches as I saw fit. All this for under $80!
I picked up a M22 Tarzan rig a while back and I still like the 7.62 rig the best... |

I like the simplicity of the original Chinese design but the pouches cover way too much of the mag. That was my first thought also. The design is clean and simple, but the mags are sitting way too low in the pouches. I have run my Chicom with my Draco since the review and it fits the bill so well. I have absolutely no complaints with my first order. I have decided to get another one to use with my Krink. I decided to go Desert Tan and to have the top of the pockets lowered 1.5". I believe 1.5" will allow enough of the magazine to stick out of the pouch so I can get hold of the magazine, easily. I'm not so concerned with "tactical" with the Draco, but with the Krink I'm thinking alittle more "tactical". I just finished emailing Colin and he said lowering the pocket 1.5" would not be a problem. So, I have just made my second purchase. Now I gotta get me some desert tan paracord and re-wrap my triangle butt stock so they will match. This is a never ending spending circle
I will post my thoughts on the new rig when I get it. |

Please post pics of what the desert tan looks like, I can't decide what color I want :/ If you check the link to 762Tactical then look at the second rig I think that is what expec for desert tan. As soon as I get mine I'll post a pic, but I only have a camera phone so I don't know if I will do it any justice. |
| yep. i got mine shorter––same price i think. it's shipping today––i did black and will probably only put two mags in 1 of the pockets and use the extra room in the other pockets for med-supplies, etc. i'm also planning on having a friend sew a pocket on the rear to hold a sappy plate for me. he was evidently running a bit behind on orders because he was finishing up work for an SF ODA unit. |

No, the patch is velcro. I want to put it where it is pictured, but couldn't find my extra velcro. So, in later pics it is at the bottom of the pouch on the pouche's velcro. I just put it there so I wouldn't loose it. I'm in the process of cleaning out my garage and found my velcro. So, I will be sewing velcro to the top of the pouch flap and my patch will go there.
I'm trying to get my act together and post my latest pics of the rig. I now have pistols mags and a Med bag on the rig and love it. Besides the patch being velcroed on it is a done deal. |

Naf,
Yeah, I think the dude is running a good business and has very good customer service skills. And, the product is worth it. I think anytime a maker listens to his customers and immediately changes his product to their specifications then that is a a very good day in the world of retail. I'm taking my Krink rig with me to an AR class on Friday. The AR mags fit fine and protrude out of the top enough. Figured they would since the 556 and 545 are so close in size. Funny thing is I have a rig dedicated to the AR, but feel the Chicom will do a better job. If this works out like I think it will I guess I'll have to make another purchase and have a dedicated Chicom for the AR. |

Hey Guys, I have been getting at TON of emails from this thread for info on the rig and other rigs I make. So many in fact it's taking a fair amount of time away from the sewing machine. So I am going to recommend you go to my Facebook page for the basic info (until I can actually get my real website to work), like pricing, current turnaround time and other items I offer.
Here is the link http://www.facebook.com/pages/762Tactical/339048366489 And look under Photos for "762Tactical Products" for pics of the rigs and pricing. Thanks, Colin 762Tactical |

PHO3N1X,
I'm glad my review helped you out. I always say you learn something new, everyday. I noticed that strap when I was at my carbine school and thought about tucking the pouch flap behind there, but we were running and gunning at the time so I didn't have time to do it. I guess I got lucky the velcro held it in place, anyway, but since you don't have velcro that wouldn't work for you. Now, I know it will work. Thanks for your input. Very nice pictures. |
|
I just added another 762Tactical Chicom to my collection. I know this isn't the AR section, but I asked Colin to make me a Chicom for the AR cause I love the AK rigs so much. I wrote a review over in the AR section Review
Thought you guys that also have ARs and don't look over there much might like to know you can get the Chicom for your AR, too.
Same excellent quality as the AK Chicoms, but designed for the AR mags. |

Just figured I should pitch in since this is the place I got a 5.5" tall rig from Colin, VERY pleased with it. First chest rig (First of any type of webbing/gear) and took awhile to get adjusted (totally my fault), but am very happy. For me, it does seem a bit short (the 5.5" model) for 30 round AK magazines, it doesn't seem to stick real solid, but is perfect for 9XAR15 and although a hair tall, quite managable for 6XFAL magazines. As soon as funds permit I plan on another chest rig from Colin, a 7" model for my AK. As...uh....currently mine is filled with six FAL magazines and I don't see that changing |

I am glad I came to this thread and looked at the rig Bikeman543 got. I had an Eagle Industries chest rig on back order, a $70 setup that no longer fit my criteria, so I canceled the order and contacted Colin. I wanted something rather unique, as I recently decided to make the switch to 20rd magazines. I also am not a fan of velcro, as it is very noisy, attracts crud and debris, and is easily foiled by mud or moisture, so I asked Colin to use metal snap buttons on the flap closures. I also wanted the pouches to hold one mag each, I find it difficult to get a good purchase on a mag if it's smack up against another one. Finally, I wanted MOLLE on the front of the pouches in addition to the sides of the rig. I must say, the result is truly awesome. The rig is perfect, material is terrific and the craftsmanship is even better. I had a LOT of extra strap, as I'm a pretty small guy, but I just folded it up and secured it with zipties in the case of the shoulder straps, and looped the strap through all the keepers over and over until there was no slack left in the belt strap. For $50, far less than any other halfway comparable rigs, I got exactly what I wanted and great customer service to boot! Here's some pics demonstrating the badass nature of Colin's work, with my SGL21 and G21. http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/lauthpics/65-1.jpg http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e133/lauthpics/66.jpg Also, it was if Colin read my mind with regards to the flaps. I normally fold them behind the mags to reach easier and faster. He put a strap inside the pouch to tuck the flaps under, so they wouldn't pull out with the mag. I have the same opinions about velcro and I'm also starting to prefer my 20 rders. I may have to see about stealing your idea and getting him to make a copy for me. |

Give him a shout, I'm sure he will be glad to help you out. Colin was very helpful and readily acquiesced to all my requests. |
