You don't have to remove an AK barrel to thread it.
However, an AK-74 usually has the threads on the front sight tower assembly and that portion is far larger then a standard AK rifle without the threaded tower. In most standard AK's the barrel itself is threaded. Much depends on what muzzle device you want to install. Most standard AK-47 barrels are threaded with 14x1 mm LEFT-HAND threads. The AK-74 is threaded with much larger 24x1 1/2mm RIGHT-HAND threads. If you need to thread the standard AK barrel you need to use a threading KIT. The kit includes the proper size threading die and a "TAT" or Threading Alignment Tool. The TAT is a stud that is a snug fit down the barrel and screws into the threading die. The TAT guides the threading die and insures the threads are square with the bore. Several people used to rent threading kits on this forum, so you might post a "Wanted" notice here or in the Equipment Exchange. All you need to thread the barrel is the threading kit with die and TAT, a handle, and some threading and tapping fluid. Here's a site with rather simplified instructions on how to thread a barrel. If you have the correct threading die and TAT you can thread AK's, AR's and many other barrels. http://preciseinnovationsllc.com/threadinginstructions.htm MANY people have threaded AK-47 barrels and as long as you pay attention and take a little care it's not at all hard to do. |
