"Its very likely that all the parts kits from which most AKs sold today are built from that will ever be imported are already here in the United States"

I over heard this statement in a gun store conversation.  I know, there is no better place to pickup bad information or outright lies about guns than to listen to folks in most gun stores.  I just want to confirm.  The rest of the conversation stated things like "all AK-47s, AK-100 series, etc. are today built on parts kits left over from the Cold War" (except some Russian guns are new Saiga/izhmash production).  That there are increasing import/export bans (not necessarily US bans) that are hampering access to AK parts.  So, is it just a matter of time before AKs have to be 100% American made or converted new production Saigas?  The supply of all these Polish, Yugos, Romanian, etc AKs are going to run dry one day, right?  And is that day sooner or later?

of course this will happen eventually. i dont know if we'll ever get 100% US made kalasnikovs, but that would be nice.

I doubt that all the kits ever are already in the US, but yes, eventually the surplus kits will dry up. When will that be? who knows, probably not for a while. It will probably become harder to import kits not because of US laws, but because there are powerful lobbying efforts at the UN who think that guns kill people and don't forget most nations don't have a 2nd amendment and don't give a shit about gun ownership. So while the US might not pass laws, internationally it might be harder to import certain items.  For the time being I wouldn't be too worried, former combloc countries need money and so will sell off their old rifles. Things just run out after a mater of time however.

Whos knows really, he says this, he says that. One thing you can count on is the price of kits going up, up, and up to the point that it removes the "building" hobby from alot of peoples budget.

Even if all the kits dissappeared overnight, sooner or later manufacturers would be making them 100% here, parts, everything.

IMO there is just so much demand they would be stupid not to.

ive had that idea before... if i can get the land to open my range, i am also going to look into opening an ammo plant that ONLY makes ak/ar calibers, 5.45, 7.62, 5.56 and maybe .308 all steel cased shooter grade. if people want match grade, they can buy the more expensive shit. im tired of not having an option when i want to buy ammo. its pissing me off.

id also love to make a full us made kalash... possibly down the road.

So when the supply dries up do you think there will be warning signs or, Like 7.62 NATO South African, you see it every month at the local gun shows and then it just instantaneously disappears.  Gone forever

Just look around the EE at some of the prices of AMD-65 kits. When they pop up, the prices are insane. Some are going for $300-$350. Now take into account that these kits were at one time $65 from Tapco. Just think what a 74 sidefolder kit will cost when they have dried up. I see the AK prices passing the AR big time.

The bad part is...they banned importation of barrels thinking it would stop kits from being brought in since the barrel is the best part of the kit...now we just have to go with US barrels once they dry up...

At which point I would expect the demand to decrease accordingly... not amongst the "AK faithful," of course, but certainly amongst the newbies and the long-time fence-sitters.

A shame, really.

You know, come to think of it, we damn near have enough parts made here to build an AK out of US parts. We already have all the furniture, sights, gas pistons, FCGs, receivers, and barrels. All we need are Gas Blocks, Front sight towers, bolt and bolt carriers, trunnions, and recoil spring assys. None of these items are going to be remarkably difficult to tool for. When the market is there, there will be a supplier to fill it.

Don't forget that one of the things that makes kit building "cheap" is that they are already headspaced, gas ports and barrel pins drilled, etc.  Cost and difficult goes up when you have a "virgin" kit.
