Removal usually requires a large shop press or some other sturdy method of pressing the sight base off.
These sight bases are pressed on TIGHT at the factory and usually don't come off easily since they were intended to stay put under heavy use. Beating them off often doesn't work and usually distorts and bends the base. First drive out the two pins on the sight base by using a good punch that's been cut off to about a 1/2" working length. This is a "starter" punch and won't bend or flex. Once the pins are moving, switch to a longer punch. Pins are usually driven out from left to right, with the right side being the side the safety lever is on. Make sire you have the barrel and sight base WELL BRACED on hard wood blocks. If when you strike the pins anything bounces or moves, the force is dissipated and the pins may distort and lock tighter in place. Once the pins are out, you have to use a method of pressing the base off the barrel. Best is a large shop press, although some people report luck using a BIG shop vise. If you plan on discarding the original base, you can also cut it off, but you still have to press a new one one. |
