Hello All,

I'm used to AR's and forgive my ignorance here as I am new around this area. I've recently fallen in love with AK's so I am selling half of my AR's and started the change over to the dark side.

How many mags do you guys keep per AK? How are there long term reliability relative to AR mags? I keep a ton of extra AR mag bodies due to them being so darn fragile. Is it a good assumption the same does not have to be done with AK mags?

Thanks!

As many as I can afford. Get plenty of 20s, 30s, and 40s.

AK mags don't break, they don't wear out, and they pretty much always work. Well, unless they're horribly abused. Of course, I think a lot of AR guys are completely insane when it comes to mags. Any well-engineered spring is good for thousands upon thousands of cycles.

No, not necissary at all.

Thanks!

I like 6 mags per AK.....one for the rifle, and five for the Man Purse.

Chinese Man Purse

"Most" AK mags are more durable than AR mags.  They had to be build as Ford tough as the rifles.  The Bulgarian waffle mags are extra durable. I would think that the only AR mags that come close to AK mags are those $50 HK high-reliability mags.

With regard to the springs within them.....springs wear out with extended use in any rifle magazine.

This isn't an AR.  It's not like when I'm at the range firing the M-4 and have to destroy malfunctioning mags to ensure they don't end up back on the range or worse yet, deployed.

AK mags will take about anything short of being run over or shot, but even then I've seen plenty that were shot and still functioned.

I'm not totally sold on polymer AK mags but the steel ones, even the cheap gunshow Bulgarians will likely be what the cockroaches call home after the apocalypse.  You're not going to break them.

I stock up on eastern bloc mags (ribbed back) when I find em for under $10 each. I've bought over 30 so far, and found only one that didn't feed, but I don't know why that one didn't work. It got tossed, ($7 down the drain, so what).

Other than that I have had no problems with them, provided you disassemble and clean them before use, as some were full of cosmoline inside when I got them.

My only AK mag complaint is the weight, but its a small price to pay for rugged reliability.

Currently I only have 8 -30rd'ers for 2 rifles (7.62). Those #'s will be jumping tomorrow soon as the post office opens by 16. So I'll have 12 per rifle, with most stored empty in ammo cans.
If I can find a smoking deal on a Tantal, I'll probably repeat the process.

Whatever...  I didn't realize you were on my team and went everywhere I've been in my twenty years of service.  If you were you would have seen some of the mags we passed around in Baghdad and Afghanistan that had bullets through them that had missed the springs and still functioned.

I have 1 AK and keep 20 on hand and my one range mag is rusty dented and crappy looking and has been kicking the last 14 years.

someone needs to take a few new AK mags, give them as much punishment as possible....run them over with truck...drop from rooftop..fill with sand, water etc....then test them...with pics of whole process posted here...sorry, I don't have a camera...but it's a cool idea

I have about 30 chinese mags, 11 beaters from the Sportsman Guide deal last year, and 15 or so barely used European ones, oh and 12 chinese bakelights, and 3 drums.  Buy as many mags as you can.  Some of the Sportsmen Guide mags will fit in one of my MAK-90's but not the other one.  AK mags are pretty tough when all said and done

I have a 30 rnd mag that is has a nice dent on the back (along the rib) about 2/3 down from the top.  someone must have taken a hamer to it or pounded it aganst a curb or something.  anyhoo, I can load 20 rounds in it before the bottom cartridge comes in contact with the dent.  it still functions great as a 20 rounder...

That's what I love about the AK, the abuse it can take.  I've seen AKs being carried in Egypt that had either no pistol grip or no stock.  Personally I think I would have grabbed a chunk of wood and a pocket knife and made a replacement but hey, it still functions.  Plus the way they aim it's probably just as accurate!
