One of the things that makes the AR-15 so popular is the standardization of everything. Yes, there are parts that need a gunsmith to install if you don't have the tool, but still, the modularity of the rifle is hard to beat. The AK on the otherhand, is an easy rifle to produce, but everyone that has produced it has their own little specs as to what makes an AK. What would be very very very nice is for manufacturers to start standardizing, and perhaps plan on ways to make things more modular. Make it so that if a barrel is shot out or damaged, a new one can be installed without needing all the different diameter specs. Sight blocks fit all barrels, or all bolts and firing pins or extractors from any country can be used in another country's rifle. Seems like this would be a benefit to everyone. I dunno what it would take to do this, but would be something easy to do I would think once everyone got on the same page. Kinda like SAAMI specs for ammunition...

i agree with everything you've said.

i cannot see the modularity issue being addressed, but the wide variety of variations and non-interchangeable dimensions do make things confusing.

i think all the producing nations view their ak's as, simply put, throw away item...never intended to be rebuilt due to the inexpensive replacement cost.
