Hey Guys,
I'm up to my neck in AR's and now I'm fending for an AK-47. I Figure I only have a budget for one AK as my AR and 1911 habit is bad enough. I have been looking around and was wondering if a milled receiver is worth the extra money. Are Lancaster AK's good quality and worth the extra money? They seemed fairly expensive compared to others. I am getting mixed opinions on Century arms. I know people have as many AK opinion's as there are AR ones. So basically what should I shoot for and where should I look?  I have read the AK forums by the way and I'm still lost. Thanks in advance.

Milled guns are less prone to the ever so slight receiver torquing a stamped 1.0mm receiver AK can do during firing...more stability makes the gun capable of better accuracy by a small degree.
But a stamped gun built on a 1.5mm or better receiver can make up the difference. But the cost is extra weight for either option.
I personally find my milled Arsenals to be a bit smoother in operation than any stamped AK I have encountered. But I own stamped guns too. Apples and oranges really. Best bet is to pick a budget for the project and don't get tangled up to much with having to have a milled gun. You will be just as pleased with a quality stamped gun for a lot less $$$ most likely.

Thanks steel. So what companies should I look at? Budget is $700-1400. I want real nice wood too. Or at least add it later.

I would look at the Arsenal USA variants (which change every 6 months or so on what they are building), A Saiga conversion done by a reputable smith set up for standard AK mags, a full build from someone like Red Jacket who will make you what ever you want the way you want it. Other than that, read up in the AK forum...plenty other good choices, these are just mine.

You can find one of these for about $850

Russian Saiga  (7.62x39 )imported and converted by Arsenal Inc.
You can buy nice US wood for about $150 , or find some original Russian wood for about $350

I have a milled AK it's nothing really special, the stamped one will serve you just fine. I don't own an arsenal or a Lancanster but I really don't see them to be worth the extra money over something like a MAK-90 which in my opinion is the best AK.
