When reading about AKs vs M4s etc, most will say the AK's have a much higher reliability. Does this same reliability apply to the semi auto versions usually found here in the US, or only to the "true" AKs abroad, such as in the middle east?

The loosness of the parts fitting together, the uniformity of the parts in the ability to replace parts (field replacable units), the ability to withstand copius amounts of abuse, dirt, fouling, sand, water, ice and snow. Within all this the AK suffers in accuracy, it does not have the pinpoint accuracy of an AR, every shot translates to a lot of movement in an AK.

I meant more along the lines of comparing the reliability of the semi auto versions generally found on sites like GunBroker, versus the tested full auto versions found on the battlefields.

Are the versions you'd buy here as good a quality, or are they cheaper knockoffs? Thanks!

I've seen ARs that ran and ran, and AKs that malfunctioned. There is a wide variation in quality in both designs. Comparing a top notch AR to a top notch AK, the difference is smaller than some would suggest.

Any decently built semi-auto AK that was assembled in the USA will be just as reliable as any foreign mil-spec.  Arsenal, Vector, home builds (if you know what you are doing), etc. will all have the legendary AK reliability.

If the AK is not a Hesse build, amatuer flat or other poor receiver choice, it should be stone axe reliable in 762 and 545.

The AKs built in the states are as reliable as the "real deals" as long as they are quality builds.

For the most part the rifles you see now on gunbroker etc.. ARE tested full auto versions found on the battlefields. They are decommissioned military arms bought by an importer and demilled into rifle kits to get around import restrictions, and then rebuilt using enough US made parts (6) to make it legal. Usually the only parts that are not original military are the fire control group, the receiver, and furniture; some folks use a US gas piston or muzzle device if they want to use foreign furniture or receiver.

I'm pretty sure some bolt action like a Mauser is gonna win that award.

I'll give big points to the AK mag for reliability.

Your dead nuts on that. AK mags are the Tanks of gun Feeding devices

loose tolerances in between parts means it's harder to jam...but the trade off is precision accuracy.

Yes, the semi-autos share the legendary reliability of the full autos.

"most reliable" ever would be a very difficult thing to decide.  The AK ranks tops in the select fire category for sure, but in bolt actions I'd be willing to bet some would say the Mauser action and the Enfield action are equal in reliability.  Me?  Gimme the quick firing Enfield over the heavy, bulky, and clunky Mauser.

The civi AK's you'll see in the US are probably alot more accurate than most AK's found in Iraq right now...considering that they have been burried, stored dry, shot until red, and abused over and over.  Even with that said they're still probably reliable as hell...

Wide clearances...

I stand by my claim that the Sig 550 series is the best AK ever made.

I have 5 AKs and have not had one jam.  I have not personally seen an AK jam either.  I am not saying they don't, just never seen it personally.  I have had lots of AR jams (with Colts and Bushmasters)  and seen too many to count.  I no longer own ARs and have 5 AKs.  You might also want to compare the trouble shooting sections of the Forums for the ARs and the AKs and see the number in each.

Precision is relative.  It only needs to be accurate enough to hit what its aimed at.  It has to be reliable each and every time though.
