Can one manufacturer be recommended more than another. I've looked  at Red Star, Tapco, Krebs, etc. just not sure which one to get.
Thanks.

I've got a tapco one in my 7.62 saiga convert its flimsy as all hell. I have the krebs in my 5.45 and it feels really solid going to have to get another for the saiga.

I'd go with TAPCO, they get criticism for the way their synthetic stuff looks, but their metal works are phenominal and very affordable, I have one in my CAI AK-74, works like a charm!  I think I have the another brand, can't remember in my WASR I got when I swapped out the trigger for a tapco g2... can't remember though!  The Tapco in my CAI was tough to install at first but once it was in place it was SOLID, not movement, nothing, its  great... waaay better than trying to figure out the shepard's crook

I have both Red Star and Tapco - equally effective.

Just bought a Krebs retainer plate this afternoon for a FCG swap in my Arsenal.  I've monkeyed with the shepherd's crook before so I'll let you know what I think about the Krebs when it arrives.

I've only ever used Tapco ones and have never had a problem.

They all seem to "work" about the same.  I like the Krebs because the retaining neck (where the safety selector pins it in place) is set out from the receiver, more or less spring-loaded, to hold the plate against the receiver wall, and makes it easier to remove.

I received my Krebs plate yesterday.  Install was stupid easy.  Like the guy above me, the slight bend in the rear of the plate seemed to make it much easier.  There were no fitment issues in my SGL-21.  I would use these in any AK that I may buy in the future.
