A guy at the gun store recommended it to me and said it will make my ak last longer. Is it really necessary??

Not really, I've never needed one. I dont think any military issues a rifle with them either.

Your AK will already outlast you, so no need to worry about it.  They also aren't necessary at all.

I guess ill answer my own question.

If this guy didn't need an AK buffer, than neither do I.....

The only time any of my AKs jammed it was when I was using a buffer that someone had given me. I yanked the thing out, tossed it out on the berm, and then blasted it with my now-reliable AK....

Buffers are a band-aid for a weak recoil spring.
If you find yourself needing one then get a new recoil spring.

I read this all the time, yet people show on U tube that their carrier is smashing into the rear trunnion on their BRAND NEW AK. I use the Buffer Tech buffer on all my AK's & FAL's, & whether it works or not, I feel better that it's there. Never had a problem. Also on some AK's that have the rail cutouts too big, it saves the rifle from the carrier jumping out of the rail. Sure the problem can be properly fixed by buying a new receiver, & installing it, but the $15 buffer will have the same result & make the problem go away. To the millions of soldiers who are issued AK's, when their trunnion is beat to crap, they just turn their AK into the armory & get a fresh replacement for free. We can't do that here. My 308 Saiga came from the factory with a metal buffer.  GARY  N4KVE

Ya my first question would be is the bolt battering the trunnion?

It will only help if your AK is overgassed. Even then, this is a bandaid solution.  In a properly built AK, the bolt carrier never touches the rear trunnion during cycling.

interesting you say that. years ago i was at a tactical shoot and some guy had 2 M1A scouts he and his buddy were shooting. the buddies rifle ran fine this guys did not. i asked if there were any diffrences in the rifles.

answer yes a buffer in the malfunctioing M1A. I had this guy pull the buffer back out.

that rifle ran like a singer after that.

pro tip: don't buy a crap quality AK. I've got 4600 rounds down the SGL21 with no issues. My trunnion is fine. friend of mine has 30k on a polytech no problem 15k on another poly tech, and over 8k on an sgl21...all without beat to shit  trunnions.

The recoil spring in said brand new AK is probably shit. I'd buy a new recoil spring before throwing a buffer on it.
If you have a poor quality AK with the rail cut too much then I'd get an extra power recoil spring from Wolff.
Buffers are pointless.

Tell that to the Chinese and the Egyptians....

I've owned my share of Norinco and Poly-Tech AKs, and in every one the bolt stops its rearward travel by striking the back of the receiver. My Maadi did the same thing, too. A combination of a buffer and the fouling of many, many rounds could make my Poly spiker hiccup occasionally. After tossing(and shooting) the buffer the problems went away. The Poly had around 20,000 rounds through it when I bought it, and almost 30,000 when I sold it.
